Baking is fun. I was under instructions from my mum to use up all the flour as it was close to expiring. This
gwyntt,
muukau and I managed quite successfully, although not without mishaps.
Our achievements last night were pistachio cake (although without the orange syrup as we couldn't find orange blossom water in the supermarket) and mammoth chocolate chip cookies (which ended up slightly burnt as we used the wrong oven setting). This morning we made a coconut and passionfruit slice which has yet to be taste tested. We again used the incorrect oven setting and only discovered this halfway through baking, so it will be interesting to see the result. We also didn't have the correct size tin, just one that was smaller by an inch in each direction. Thus the tin was filled to the brim with mixture left over, while the pastry took up one third the depth of the tin.
Edit: The results are in: Slighly undercooked in the middle although that could also be blamed on our lack of cream and substitution of coconut milk. It still tasted damn fine :D
I then spent the rest of the day over at Revi's making pasta salad for their Crew dinner frequently interrupted with breaks to play with his new kitten.
This evening I actually remembered to attend cubs[0], and Ian was very thankful that I did. The main leader was on leave this week and it was Ian's first night to tackle the Cubs alone. Overall, he did very well, with few mistakes. Although, I need to remember to speak up more. I'm never really sure exactly how much I'm expected to step in and he had a few problems getting the kids under control. But then he's been helping out for maybe 3 months, possibly a maximum of 6. Whereas, I think I've been a leader for nearly four years now. From that perspective, he's manged better than me when I first started. I'll need to teach him how to fold the flag properly though.
[0] I forgot last week. I was sick and didn't intend on appearing. But I first and foremost forgot about the first night back completely (despite multiple emailed reminders), and thus forgot notifying the other leaders of my inability to attend. I didn't remember until 9:45 that evening, an entire hour and 15 minutes after the meeting's close. D'oh!
