I'll try to reign myself in, but I make no promises. Those of you who don't want to read, feel free to skip.
OK, I got the latest issue of Shojo Beat yesterday (finally). And, short summary of various series are:
Absolute Boyfriend: The school is going on a class trip. And, it seems Night now has his own fan club (is that common in Japan? I mean, Yuki from 'Fruits Basket' also has one). Mika still has her eye on nabbing Night for herself, unbeknownst to Riiko. So far, no one knows of Night's relationship with Riiko (which is how she prefers it), however Mika knows and I have a feeling Soshi knows as well. Of course, we all know Soshi has a crush on Riiko, not that he'd ever admit it. Anyway, Riiko goes and buys matching bracelets for her and Mika, as a symbol of their friendship. On the trip, Riiko bumps into a mysterious and quiet girl named Satori. Mika tells Riiko that she'll make arrangememnts for her and Night to meet up later on that night. At the hot springs, Night asks Soshi if he knows what would turn Riiko on. Needless to say, this greatly surprises Soshi. He tells Night he wouldn't know (and you can tells he's super embarassed). Night, of course, is trying to find out more about women, and Riiko in particular. The other guys say that they know nothing about women either, and that the key is to ask other girls. Night figures that he could ask Mika (uh-oh). Afterwards, someone tells Night that his girlriend wants to meet him in the woods at night. Night automatically thinks it's Riiko, since, to him, no one else could be his gf (since, basically, he's programmed that way). Mika, on the other hand (who set the whole thing up), tells Riiko that Night won't be able to meet her since the girls from his fanclub nabbed him. Satori overhears this. Riiko thinks nothing of it, after all, why would her best friend lie about it. She does become a little worried about him, however. Night goes to the meeting spot, thinking he's going to meet up with Riiko. Riiko, wakes up and notices Mika missing. Satori tells her that she went out awhile ago. She then warns Riiko to be careful around Mika. Mika is out telling Night that Riiko is tired of him (not true, of course). She tells him that Riiko was scared off by his fan club. She then 'trips' so she can land on Night. She then confesses to him that she's liked him from the beginning and, even though he's not available she was wondering if he felt the same. Night, however, spurns Mika, telling her he's not interested in anyone but Riiko. This pisses Mika off. She tells him that Riiko was planning on dumping him (also not true). Night simply responds by saying if it would make Riiko happy, then it was fine with him. He then counters by saying he thought that Mika and Riiko were friends and that she knows Riiko a lot less than she thought she did (go Night). He then tells Mika that he wants to continue to learn more about Riiko, both the good and the bad. He then tells her the data he recieved from her wasn't any good, and leaves. Mika, shaking with fury, is more determined than ever to break Riiko and Night apart. She even breaks the friendship bracelet Riiko bought for her. Riiko, meanwhile, still noticing Mika's missing, is beginning to be worried about her.
My opinion: I personally think Riiko should find out the truth about Mika and stop being friends with her. I mean, Riiko is genuine about her friendship with Mika, but Mika obviously doesn't feel the same. And I'm proud of Night for rebuffing Mika's advances, although, technically, he's programmed only to like Riiko.
Crimson Hero: Nobara is still determined to start up a girls volleyball team, but so far, there's only three girls and there needs to be six to have a team. She tells her aunt that even though they scored a point against the boys, it wasn't enough to draw more girls into trying out. One of the girls, Yui, is a third-year and will be graduating soon (it's May), so she wants to have a team before graduation. Nobara heads to her next class and there a girl... sits on her lap. Needless to say, this embarasses Nobara. She then tells her (and the other girls) that she want to try out for the team. Her name is Rena and she's very girly. She has long nails and everything. When asked if she's ever played volleyball, she says she never has. The other two girls, Yui and Ayako have serious doubts. Rena then butts in and accidentally drops a few pictures of Nobara. This freaks Nobara out, saying that, as a girl herself, she has no interest in girls. Rena says that she simply admires Nobara and really wants to play volleyball with her after seeing her play against the boys. Then another girl comes up and shyly says she wants to join too. Her name is Kyoka and she played a little in Junior High. The guys she dorms with congratulate her on finding more members. The next day, as Nobara heads onto the court to get some practice in while the guys are out, she gets glomped by Rena again. Rena said she'd join in the practice. She tells Nobara she even cut her fingernails so she could be able to play. She says that even though she's small, she'll try her hardest. Nobara is touched by Rena's devotion. They then hear someone's inside playing. It's a girl. She plays really well, too. Nobara rushes inside, thinking she found a sixth player. Ayako and Yui are then discussing how good the girl (Tomoyo) was in Junior High. Ayako says she doubts Tomoyo would join since she was injured during a game and quit playing. Tomoyo then introduces herself to Nobara, who instantly knows who she is and her skill level. She then asks if Tomoyo would be interested in joing their team. Tomoyo refuses, however. She says she doesn't want to play with mediocre players. Rena then tells Nobara that the boys are starting to come back. Tomoyo then says it makes her shudder to even consider being on a team with someone the likes of Rena. Nobara then thinks of how Rena told her she even cut her nails and how she'd try her best. Nobara then tells Tomoyo to take back her insult, even though Rena tries telling her it's not a big deal. Tomoyo says that she can't stand the way some people look up to Nobara and then she leaves. As she leaves, Tomoyo runs into Haibuki (the guy who used to have a crush on Nobara and is now one of the boys team's best players). Nobara is surprised he even knows Tomoyo. Tomoyo thinks back to something Haibuki said, along the lines of how impressed he was with Nobara's skill (at least, that's my intrerpretation). She then runs off. Nobara asks Haibuki how he knows Tomoyo, and one of the other boys says she used to be his girlfriend.
My opinion: I'm not sure I like Tomoyo. She seems kinda snobby. However, there seems to be a possibly developing love triangle between Nobara, Haibuki and another one of the boy players, Yushin (even though Yushin says he has a girlfrind already).
NANA: OK, I'm gonna cut this one short. Basically, the neighbors were disrupted by the noise from the playing. One of them said that Apt. 707 was cursed. Hachi, of course, gets freaked out by it. She tells Nobu to stay in her room and she'll stay with Nana. Nobu tells her about their band they used to have and how he wants to start up again. Nobu tells Hachi that Nana's dream is to make it with her singing. Hachi then hatches an idea to start recruiting for members. She makes up a flyer and posts in in the store front where she works. Shoji stops by and notices and Hachi tells him about it. She's all jazzed but Shoji seems indifferent about it. She asks if he wants to hang out later, but he says he has to work. She complains about it and Shoji tells her that he tries to make time for her, but the last time they did anything, she had to leave. He tells her why he should be the one working around her timetable. Hachi then feels bad about it. He asks her if she texted him yesterday, and she can't remember if she did. She checks and it turns out she did. She then feels even worse for being a bit selfish. Back at the store, she tries to think of ways to make it up to him when she's interrupted by someone inquiring about the flyer. Turns out, it's a really cute guy named Shinichi. At Shoji's restaurant, a new waitress is hired by the name of Sachiko who happens to be very cute. Hachi and Shinichi are at the apartment where Nana is looking over Shin's 'resume.' Nana doesn't care about qualifications, just if they can rock! Shin is more than willing to demonstrate, right there in the apartment. Hachi says that unless they want to get more complaints, they need to go somewhere else. Shin knows of a place. They go and play a Sex Pistols song to try out on. Both Nana and Nobu notice something familiar about Shin's playing. Turns out, he based it on Ren's playing (you remember Ren, right). Hachi recognizes his name from Trapnest (Ren's, not Shin's). Nana tells Shin he can be in the band on one condition... he has to play better than Ren. Meanwhile, Shoji accompanies Sachiko to her train stop.
My opinion: Methinks there's trouble in paradise between Hachi and Shoji. Of course, I knew this already having peeked at spoilers. And Nobu is pretty cute, but Takumi is still my fave...obviously (looks at her layout).
Kaze Hikaru: Seems that trouble is brewing in Osaka. Ronin claiming to be Mibu-Roshi are terrorizing local merchants and forcing them to pay outrageous sums of money. The news finds its way to the actual Mibu-Roshi which of course means they have to investigate. Okita and Saito are chosen to pick members and to go into Osaka. Sei is a bit disappointed to find she wasn't among those chosen, but she more disappointed in the fact she won't be seeing Okita for awhile (giggles). She then thinks back to what Akesato said to her, that she was in love wih Okita (giggles more). She then becomes more and more determined not to have anyone find out, otherwise her cover is blown. Serizawa-san then surprises her and declares she's in love, to which she replies, DWAH?! (giggles even more). Serizawa than tells her it was her eyes that gave her away. "Akesato was that good, was she?!" Sei almost thought he knew the truth. He then tells her how Shimabara isn't the only brothel. Sei, of course, flatly declines. So he drags her along on the mission to Osaka, much to Okita's dismay. He feels she isn't ready yet for the confrontation they may have to make. This news hits Sei like a ton of bricks (or a huge boulder, depending). When she objects, he tells her that seeking vengance on someone is one thing, but lack of experience may actually hinder this particular mission. Saito pipes up and says if that were the case, he'd kill her himself. Saito feels there can be no greater lesson than to hone one's skill in battle. If she lives it would be training, if not, than it was 'his' time to go. Okita, however, is still concerned (^___^). In Osaka, we meet up with Kanji Yamashiro (from a few chapters back. Remember the guy who tried to take 'advantage' of Sei). He's at his family's inn, being chewed out by his father for laziness. He leaves and runs into his friend Shinkichi (also from before). Kanji's still shaken by Okita threatening him with his sword and asking him to leave after stopping the attack on Sei. Despite everything, he still admires that lifestyle. Soon, a woman stops by to greet Kanji. She asks for some money. He seems surprised she'd ask him, but she tells him to think of the baby. He's stunned, thinking it's his, but she says no since they hadn't had a relationship in years. She tells him she's quitting the teahouse where she works and plans to marry the baby's fahter. Kanji congratulates her and wishes her well. He asks who the father is. She tells him he used to be a ronin from Choshu but now works as a carpenter. Kanji then asks if he was a Separatist. Osayo (the girl) says she doesn't know anything about that. After she leaves, who should come walking up? Okita. Needless to say, Kanji is surprised. Of course, Sei spots him as well and remembers what he tried to do to her. She rushes forward, like she's ready to attack, but Okita stops her. Kanji falls to the ground in supplication, begging for forgiveness. Serizawa then inquires to who is is blocking their path. Saito comes in and says who and then says he left the Mibu-Roshi due to an ailment (instead of the actual truth). Okita asks after Kanji, and he, still bowing, says he's doing better in order to play along and save face. The townspeople instantly recognize the Mibu-Roshi and give them dirty looks since they think they're still the ones responsible for the terrorizing. Serizawa complains that now they've been recognized, that the culprits will then lay low, making it difficult to find them. Okita wonders if the townspeople would be hospitable enough to put them up, despite what's happened. Kanji then speaks up that since his family owns an inn, that they should stay there. Sei objects strongly, and when the others wonder why, she claims she meant to say something else. Kanji goes up to her and tries to apologize for his actions from before, but Sei just wants him to stay away from her. She's outraged at the thought of the fact she's expected to forgive him. She then wonders if it's because she's a girl, that she can't take it lightly. Okita and Sei are then taken to their room. Sei is surprised that she has a room just with Okita. He says he asked for it that way, much to her surprise. He wants to speak to her in private. He tells her to go back to Kyoto. She asks why. He says that she's too distracted with the fact she ran into Kanji here. She denies this, of course. Okita says that if she stays, it's likely she'll have to do battle with the opposition. He then questions whether or not she'd be able to kill a Loyalist who is willing to put their life on the line for their ideals. She says it wasn't a whim. He then asks if it wasn't, than what was it. She thinks to herself, "Because I couldn't be apart from you." (quadruple giggles) Then she thinks perhaps she is distracted. Okita says that her ambition is that of avenging her father and her brother. Seeing as he feels responsible for letting the ones who did it get away, he states he'd like to see that revenge carried out. Basically he's telling her not to die here so she'll be able to carry out her goal. Sei's touched by his consideration. She then claims she will follow him (to herself, of course). In order to appease Serizawa, who brought her along in the first place, they come up with the idea of having her send a notice back to Kondo-sensei in Kyoto. Sei thinks to herself that even though she wants to stay by Okita's side, to do so just because of her own selfishness would be inconsiderate. On the street on the way out of town, she runs into Kanji again. He wonders why she's leaving. She tersly tells him to mind his own affairs. Osayo comes up behind him and gushes over Sei. She then says she hopes her baby will be a boy and be just like Sei. Sei expresses surprise at this news, to which Kanji loudly proclaims to not being the father. Sei excuses herself and gives well wishes to Osayo. She, in turn, tells Sei to remain healthy. Then she sees her lover crossing the road and calls out to him. Sei notices him as well. She also notices he looks like one of the men who killed her father and brother. She chases after him, much to the confusion of Kanji. She corners him and he starts to say she looks familiar. Then she says that the doctor from Kyoto and his eldest son were her father and brother and she wishes to seek vengance on them.
My opinion: OK, there were a few cute scenes in here that I admit to sqeeing about. What can I say. I think Okita and Sei are just so cute!
That's it. I'm tired of typing. I read vol. 14 of Furuba, but more on that some other time.
