Words I thought I would never say: PLEASE SOMEONE BE TAPING OPRAH TODAY!!!!

(because BSB is going to be on it and KEVIN WILL BE THERE :O )

I spent last night watching approximately 5 hours of "Toddlers & Tiaras" because my favorite activity is judging other people, and that show is the perfect opportunity to exercise one's serious judgment muscles, for truth.

I apologize in advance to you if you're into pageants, because we are going to have wildly different opinions on the practice. Same goes for sororities.

I mean, I can vaguely imagine a situation where I would put my kid(s) in pageants, but it'd have to be pretty extreme. I think if it was my son, I'd be more okay with it possibly, just because I think male pageantry perpetuates far fewer stereotypes and negative lessons, plus the boys seem to actually gain quite a bit of confidence from it, probably because you'd have to be incredibly self-confident to withstand bullying from other boys over this.

The girls, though, I'd only put my girls in pageants if they were super shy and bullied at school and this gave them a chance to feel secure and they really really really really REALLY wanted to do it. I know of girls that had that experience and pageants were actually the magic solution, but I feel like that's a rare thing. Moreover, I think one or two pageants would probably be sufficient. No enhancements or spray tans or flippers or fake hair/lashes and certainly no making a long standing habit of it.

Okay, so that said, I think pageants are, for the most part, COMPLETELY EVIL, much like sororities. They don't actually teach many useable life skills beyond "this is how to parade yourself like a horse or dog" and they seriously seriously creep me out with how they treat women like animals. I actually am seriously curious if people bet on the outcome of pageants like they do with horse races.

The flashing message is that women must do what it takes to be 'most beautiful' by arbitrary standards... and that basically means plastic-ing yourself up as much as possible, complete with fake emotion... and that being judged is appropriate and even desired. ... and that other women are your competition. :C :C :C

I don't know, it just reeks of the whole idea of traditional womanhood and submission and just ick ick ick.

The glam pageants in particular make me want to just put on an actual face mask and enter, because how is that such a huge step away from the fake tans/fake hair/fake lashes/fake teeth thing?

I actually like most of the girls that are in the natural pageants on T&T, so even though I disagree with pageants on principle, at least I can clearly see that natural pageants are less destructive than glam pageants... but still.

Argh, and plus it's just like, why would you do this to your child? Why would you train her like a puppy and dress her like a creepy child sex doll? It's like some kind of chimo totally thought this whole thing up and is on the biggest Win of his chimo existence. I mean, that just applies to the child pageants, and I actually wish we could abolish "Miss America" and "Miss Universe" and all similar pageants as well, but oh well. I feel like we should have grown out of this as a society by now. My grandmother was Miss Cherry or something like that, but that's exactly what that should be... something my GRANDMOTHER did and no one does anymore.

Another problem I have with pageants is that in certain places it seems to be almost required - like a social stepping stone to the in-crowd. Same with sororities. It's an elitist structure that forces you to conform to sexist (and brain-numbing) standards in order to advance (read: marry well) and I want to punch it in the face.

Alright, so whatever, in conclusion - hate that shit, moving on, and I hope season 2 is on netflix because I want to watch more of this freak show. It's like watching horror movies :DDD
