I sighed and brought the second box up from records. If I had to go back down there a third time to grab some other section of the files I was going to pass out. I crossed the floor and dropped the box onto the table with a nice thud. I glanced at my watch and smirked. It was already 1am. The briefing was in only 7 hours, and I wasn't sure if cold Chinese was going to be the right breakfast food anyway. I slid onto the leather chair and waited for Lilah to come back with the documents that we had to get the triplicates of. I swear this firm killed more trees than it did clients. Of course I suppose that was a good thing. Not killing clients I guess.
I leaned back in the chair a bit more exhausted then I let on. I slipped my heels off and let then clunk to the floor one at a time. I pulled my legs up and rested my feet along the laquered edge of the table. I finally heard the clicking of her heels down the hardwood floored halls. I shifted up in my seat trying to give the impression that I had been working the entire time she was gone.
She sighed and flung the papers onto the desk. I glanced at them and saw that the toner was a bit fainter. I suppose the stack of papers that we had already made did a bit of a dent on the toner supply. I grabbed the stack and shuffled them into a bit of a neater pile. I glanced over my shoulder to see her standing there in the light of the doorway.
The conference room wasn't really lit too bright, so there was this ethereal glow around her form from the hallway lights. I could have said she looked angelic, but I knew better than that. A woman like Lilah is far from Angelic. She might fool you on occassion but even she knows the truth. I smiled at her, knowing that this was going to be a long night. We had a lot of files to sort, and statements to review. It wasn't one of those fun late night things. It was work.
I hated work. I didn't mind all the day to day stuff. Roaming the halls checking up on things, but when it came down to the wire and the Partners put the Liasons' on it? Then you know it is serious. So here we were. The serious people of the firm. That was almost laughable though. Well at least for me.
"Running low on toner huh? I grabbed those files, and have no clue if I want to keep going right now. I think I need a break or my mind is going to go numb."
