womenlovefest Day 7: Bonnie Bennett

Sep 15, 2011 08:42

Everyone in the love fest has already said so many wonderful things about Bonnie in the general sense, so I decided to focus on my favorite Bonnie scene.

Yes, it is that scene, the scene that probably gets her the most hate. I just love it. There are so many layers of pain and anger and guilt built into it. Did she overreact? Yes. That doesn't take away from how powerful the scene is.

We're not told she feels any guilt over the fact that she was the one who suggested giving Caroline his blood, but based on what we know about her already she has to be feeling it. She's one of her best friends, and not only has she been turned, but now she's killed someone. Maybe if she'd just let it be this wouldn't have happened.

Then Damon opens his mouth. He's so flippant about burring the body and it sets her off. That was a life, a life she felt responsible for, and he just brushes it off like it's nothing. He does this all the time. He may not have been the one to kill Caroline, but he's killed so many others and if he weren't there, nothing horrible would have happened to her friends or family. Everything would be fine and she and her Grams would be nurturing her powers together.

I love it because it's so raw and real. Also, as much as this is an antagonistic scene between Bonnie and Damon, it sets up a baseline for Bonnie and Damon's strange sort of partnership later in the season. Despite their moral differences, this seems to hint that they have similar ways of coping when compared with how he reacts to the situation with Rose. In both cases they feel the pain of the loss, along with partial responsibility for it. The difference is that Damon lashes out at whoever happens to be there, while Bonnie lashes out at someone who brings pain and death everywhere he goes--someone who deserves it.

When considering this...isn't it funny how Damon is loved and Bonnie is hated?
