Eduke32... The Premiere Duke Nukem 3D Port...

I've been following this project for years and the scope has changed since then. At first it was just a port to add better 3D rendering as in accelerated rather than the old software rendering it had and adding somewhat higher resolution textures. But since then it's been upgraded to feature more dynamic lighting, normal maps which carve geometric detail into flat walls making them more detailed and 3D.

The only thing is this kind of set the high res pack project back some because they ended up having to redo all the textures to be even more higher resolution and have normal maps, etc. to upgrade it to the newer standards of the day but slowly but surely they seem to be making progress.

I'm looking at the Mac version here and the progress there recently has been pretty good. At one time I used to have to rely on a certain person to compile a new binary for the Mac version whenever a new revision would come out but he was never on the ball and often builds would not come out in a timely manner or at all.

Also one of the eduke32 developers started building it from time to time but he offered his builds as raw binaries.. by that I mean he didn't put them into a .app bundle like most Mac developers do. Then the last drawback about it was it wasn't as easy to compile yourself one had to edit a makefile and even then certain things weren't compiling correctly for me.

The updates they have been doing lately seemed to have fixed those though and I can pull down the latest source code and run a script that compiles and generates a .app file for me so that's good. The performance of the engine seems to be improving some lately as well.

The whole thing is of course always still a work in progress and many of the level textures still don't have normal maps and some of the lights in the levels don't have light sources, etc. some of the models are still to ~2004 level and need replacement... but it's fun for me pulling down new versions and seeing what's updated and what's improved.
