New Amsterdam 1x04: Honor (and next week's preview)

The shallow observations:
He meets The One in episode 1, finds her in episode 3, sleeps with her in episode 4, and tells her the Big Secret in episode 5? Either this is going to be the shortest running show since Firefly or they actually have interesting places to go later and are getting this malarky out of the way early on. I'm suspicious.

The not-shallow observations:
The show seems willing to go places (early and often even) that other shows treat as Very Special Episodes. I'm split on this one. On one hand, I want them to do better than "other cultures = terrible" that makes the rounds of so many shows, on the other, I am pleased with a storyline that actually says, out loud, in Eva Marquez's voice, "What is it about women that scares men so much that they feel that they need to rape and kill?"

I especially appreciated John's complete inability to have the "right" reaction back in 1803. He just doesn't have a reference for putting himself in the same sort of situation and mindset. Fortunately, another 200 years seems to have done him some good. (Even if he is otherwise crazy and grumpy.) Also, in the end I prefer the horror of "honor" killings to be overdone rather than hidden away and never spoken of.

Also, Eva and John taking down the rapist was hot. Eva continues to out-awesome Sara 2-1. Maybe it's just that every time I look at her and her hospital and her sort-of husband, I think that she's wandered over from Gray's Anatomy. With somewhat less awesome than Addison Montgomery." I don't hate Sara at all - in fact I appreciate that she is not a 24-year-old supermodel. At this point, I'm not sure what John would do with a true innocent and Sara's ER career and unsettled marriage are helpful in that. Still. Eva > Everyone but Lily.

In other news, I put sweet corn cake in the oven to reheat and forgot it was in there. It's only burnt in one corner so I'm hoping a little butter will wet it down.
