Yesterday, to add to the misery of bad news, I was also miserable from bad case of nasal allergies and the crying didn’t help. I was too sad and miserable to read on the metro. And I don’t listen to music or watch shows - am not really an ear plug girl. Or if I do listen to music you will catch me bouncing away to music. Which would be fine on the Red line of the Metro but Orange/Silver line is more reserved. So reserved that everyone getting on has the look of how Hollywood portrays the Secret Service - men and women. Most (at least during rush hours) are in suits and both men and women lack color in fall/winter - we all wear the uniform grey/black winter wool jacket. Sure, it’s not so cold yet for that but somehow as the change of the season fashion seems to be in mourning. And with the way the Metro is suffering from one issue or the other everyone is holding their breath at every slowdown of the train and anticipating whether they will make it to their destination or not. So, riding the Orange/Silver line is absolutely gloomy and dull.
So, yesterday as I got on the metro to get home, a certain someone caught my eye. I wasn’t reading my book and so I was people watching - one reason I like the Metro. This man had colour on him - his fashion sense was brighter than the others around him. And he looked so familiar. He was handsome and there are many handsome men who ride the metro. Then I realized he had hair that was not a crew cut that every mid20s+ career men end up getting making them all look the same. Beautiful set of hair. But no that wasn’t what made him stand out.
He was smiling!! Not grinning like a fool, like I usually do - OK not on the metro but he gave a pleasant friendly smile with whomever he made eye contact with! And for that he stood out. It was so nice. What a refresher. Clearly he is visiting because no one does that! We all like looking grumpy on the Metro. (We do smile and wish each other walking around Arlington but not on the Metro).
I doubt I will ever see him again. Didn’t hurt that he was cute. I told this to my hubby. Because I know N is the type who would also smile at people. We need more people like that. But it’s sad that for more than some it would freak them out.
I should go travel on Red line once in a while. There’s more life there and maybe then I will appreciate the quiet gloom of the Orange/Silver line.
