yoga & exercise (week report)

Some time last week, I watched this TED talk this one given by Sandra Aamodt on Why dieting doesn't usually work. Absolutely loved it! I always feel we are too focused on our weight than looking at the bigger picture of health - our lifestyle, eating mindfully, physical movement.

And there were a string of other articles on sugar in our daily ( Read more... )

Why dieting doesn't usually work.

dieting doesn't work because our bodies are made to store fat whenever possible so as to overcome periods of starvation. Except we don't have periods of starvation anymore.

So in order to lose weight we have to fight our bodies/instincts and starve. Which no one wants to do, because people who enjoyed starvation probably didn't last too long historically.

There's no point in fighting it. Eat the sugar. It's good.

exactly what she said in the video. And an important point to be so mindful of.

I love my sugar high… once in a while. Sadly so much of our food here (and in India) is filled with sugar EVERY DAY! bleah… and that really reduces the high you get from a sugar high. And you then have to eat more sugar to get a high. So, yeah, if I eat that cake every week, it will lose the enjoyment value like we are right now… yum yum.

I don't diet (where you have to starve yourself, etc.)… never believed in it. And I would have been sent to the doc's office, Finally I am not considered underweight! (and the only reason is because they have adjusted the BMI charts, not because I have actually put on significant weight!)

I have become such a snacker. All hubby's influence! Trying to move back to eating three yummy meals a day and a snack in the afternoon. I was much happier then! Now I find myself eating when I am not hungry and just to pass time! Another reminder she gives in the video. :)

I don't know, man. what works for you works for you, you should eat however you want, of course- but I assure you I eat a lot of sugar every day and it doesn't get old for me ;)

In real life, I am not as worried as I make it seem on LJ-land. :) I eat everything I want and then I look at my cousins and panic. I am the only one left (some reason it's affected the girls and not the boys) who is considered healthy (no back problems, knee problems, BP problems, etc.) and also happens to be slim. That's out of 10 of us!

My dad was like me (I guess I am like him). Skinny and all. And now he has obesity issues (actually, it's all around his belly… his legs are still skinny and so the knees are all shot!!)! That has led to arthritis (for 2 decades) and so many other problems. I am the same way. I add all my weight on my tummy… not the healthiest of places to add weight! sigh.

So, I try to be more mindful. At 65, I want to still be able to walk about without arthritis and any other health issues. That would just be added stress for D! And still be able to enjoy a slice of cake then too! :D
