okay I'm over my cold and am therefore continuing on with life.

CONTINUING MY EDUCATION
I have aptly taken advantage of the library recently, but the good thing about birthdays is you have the opportunity to get fancy new shiny books. Chose my books wisely and a few were given as a surprise. In any case, these books are how I plan to continue my education as a graphic design/artisan in general:

Caffeine for the Creative Mind: 250 Exercises to Wake up Your Brain
fairly self-explanatory. great for when my brain is farting and I can't quite decide how I want to be creative on any given day. think I'm going to try to stick with this book and do one a day and we'll see what happens.

The Encyclopedia of Writing and Illustrating Children's Books
This one was given to me by my brother. good call brother. It's something I've been curious about but never really looked into. another project for suzy.

Stencil 101
shout out to sean! he got me this one. a how to on stencil making and using with a book full of stencils ready to use as well. must get environmentally safe chalk spray paint. and blue ski mask.

100 Habits of Successful Graphic Designers
chapter one is self promotion and chapter two is working with clients. already hooked. six other chapters, too.

Graphic Artists' Guild Handbook: Pricing and Ethical Guidelines
because pricing in graphic design is this big mess of people making up prices. and because it has the very important chapters about legality and trademarks and copyrights which I need to take the time to learn. I feel like this is one I will attack with a highlighter and make notes in the margins. look it up, the cover is awesome, too.

so let's just pretend those are the five classes I'm taking this suzy semester which starts next Monday and ends hopefully at a productive rate.

ELECTIVE CLASSES (which really just means, other books I'm reading):

How to Cheat in Abobe Flash CS3
I realize this one should be more of a primary concern but it's some dense material and I have a more pressing need to get down pricing and graphic design. but it's still on the list cause it's a skill I want to master.

The Devil in the White City
so completely unrelated to anything. a book my mom let me borrow about the Chicago World's Fair. the chapters alternate between the perspective of the architects--who had to build this fantastic city in record time and how they make all these engineering breakthroughs (like the invention of the ferris wheel)--and the story of a serial killer who used the fair to have easy access to women passing through. all nonfiction mind you.

Animals in Translation
a non-fiction book about a woman with autism who has discovered striking parallels between autistic thought and how animals themselves process thinking and feeling. haven't started it yet but it sounds interesting. this one's from the library.

and lastly Alex & Me
again, from my brother. given to me possibly because he heard I wanted to get a parrot again. basically, birds are awesome. I had pet quails when I was a kid which I realize is fairly unique. and later I had parakeets. It's a nonfiction book about a scientist and her african grey parrot who worked together for thirty years studying animal intelligence and the relationship between them.

yikes, okay. so I realize that means I'm reading nine books right now. just gotta juggle time between them and remember to switch off.

in news outside the world of books, Storyville contacted me and wants to put my earrings up in their shop. meeting with the owners later today to look into that and see if it's worth it. I know they'll probably take 40-50% but there's a greater likelihood of selling and I could probably raise the price if it's in a retail shop. we shall see.
