Last Day in Australia

Thursday, December 4th was the last full day in Australia. I hung out with Michael, an Internet pen pal, in Newcastle. Michael is very knowledgeable about local history, so it was interesting to have a local guide available. Afterwards, I packed and rested up for the trip home.

The train trip from Newcastle to Sydney took about three hours. I had driven that route before, but this time I could actually look at the scenery. It was green as one would expect in summertime. For the first time I noticed that most of the greenery was eucalyptus trees. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising, but it was the first time I had noticed.

I arrived at the Sydney airport in plenty of time for my flight, so I ended up with a window seat for the flight to San Francisco. I managed to sleep fairly well on the 13-hour flight, which was nice. I was actually somewhat functional when I got off the plane.

I met a former co-worker for lunch in Berkeley, and then continued to the Sacramento area to visit some friends. I'll go home tomorrow after the UW-Cal football game. It's been a good trip: fun, exciting, and relaxing all at the same time. We'll see how long it takes before I go overseas again. I don't think it'll be long.
