“What the hell is going on?”

Alex sighed. Since she’d fought with Olivia, they hadn’t spoken and the detective sent Elliot in her place when they needed something. Alex had gotten used to his overly abrasive nature in the past, but it was far different when it was directed at her on a daily basis, during every interaction they were ever forced to have.

She took a moment to mentally brace herself before she looked up at him. “Hello, Elliot.”

“Save the niceties for someone who cares. Mind telling me why we don’t have a warrant?”

“There’s not enough evidence.”

“We have fingerprints!”

“They both said he was in the apartment earlier that day.”

“In the bedroom?!”

“He said, she said.”

“This is bullshit!” Elliot turned away for a moment as if trying to control his anger before he seemed to decide that it didn’t matter and he rounded on her again, finger pointed accusingly. “I don’t know what the hell has gotten into you but you better get that stick out of your ass before I go over your head.”

“Excuse me?” Alex frowned, leaning back in her chair.

“You’re letting your personal life interfere with work and it’s bullshit.”

Alex wavered slightly but fired back, “This has nothing to do with Olivia and I and frankly, it’s none of your damn business.”

“None of my business?! My partner has been overworking herself for weeks. She’s refusing to talk to me about anything not related to the job. She’s started spacing out because she’s not getting enough sleep. What happens when her reaction time is just a second too late when we’re handling a perp? You’re gonna get her killed, Cabot!”

Alex swallowed hard, gazing up at him. “What do you want me to do about it?”

He leaned on her desk, staring her down. “I don’t know what the fuck you did to screw things up with her but you have caused more than enough problems with this squad. You either stop whatever shit it is that you’re doing or you leave.” He hung his head for a moment, breathing out a bitter laugh before looking up at her, his expression finally soft, though Alex realized immediately that it was only because of Olivia. “It’s like you had a fucking radar or something. I think she was finally getting over you. Then you had to come marching back in like you own the place, no explanations. You know, I had a soft spot for you because you were my best friend’s girl.” His eyes narrowed again. “You don’t deserve her.  You should have stayed gone. She was healing. But no, you had to come back and dangle that happiness in front of her all over again. I am tired of my partner being half of a person. Either get your shit together or leave and don’t you ever come back.”

Alex sat completely still, mortified when she felt tears forming in her eyes. She stayed silent, afraid to speak and cause them to spill down her cheeks.

“Have I made myself clear?” Elliot practically snarled.

Alex merely nodded and cursed the single tear that had managed to escape.

Elliot appeared unfazed. “Good.” He gazed at her for a moment before he finally turned and left, the door slamming shut behind him.

Alex shook slightly in her seat, staring at the door as the tears began falling faster.

She was finally getting over you.

She knew Elliot was just angry. She knew he was trying to hit her where it hurt, but she couldn’t help but wonder if he was right. The words tangled inside her and she felt a heavy weight in the pit of her stomach. She shut her eyes and swallowed hard. Maybe he was right. Maybe Olivia deserved someone better, someone who wasn’t broken.
