the more i read about what went on that day, the less of a problem i have with anything the police did and actually the crowds were pretty well behaved too. there were twonks, but there were a lot of reasonably sensible people too.
the guy who died may or may not have been a protester but it looks like he had a heart attack unrelated to the event. a couple of plastic bottles *were* thrown at the police while they were tending to him but reports are that the parts of the crowd that could see what was happening clamped down on the offenders pretty quickly without the police having to do anything. so some people at least who were not twonks :)
there is a video doing the rounds of the police trying to disperse the climate camp at bishopsgate which has riot gear and batons and the like but (the version i saw at least, and that was without sound) was so heavily edited that i've no idea of the exact circumstances and don't trust what the publishers (some protest group) want me to believe.
i think the police still need to refine their method a bit or they will get dragged through the courts again on human rights grounds. after 4hrs sitting on a grounded airplane they have to water you and give access to facilities, i wouldn't be surprised to see the police under similar strictures :)
