Chapter Twenty-Three
Oliver shifted in his chair beside Connor's hospital bed. The doctors had run a few tests, and while waiting for the results, had a nurse station Connor a room to rest. He had clearly been exhausted from the fear and stress, and since it was going to take a while to get back the results, they thought it was important to make him as comfortable as possible. Oliver managed to make sure they secured their own room so Connor wouldn’t be disturbed, and Chloe had called Adrian immediately so they could let Nicklaus know Connor was going to be alright. After her phone call, she had crawled into Connor's bed behind him, brushing her hand through his hair to soothe him into relaxation.
Oliver watched them as they both started to drift into sleep, his eyes only leaving them to fall to Connor's hand holding his tightly.
He swallowed hard, try to suppress the anxiety and tension still present in his throat. He had only known about Connor less than three months and he had already been scared to death of losing him, of some unfortunate circumstance taking him. As soon as Nicklaus had screamed for Chloe, Oliver had felt his heart stop and the fear still remained rooted in his body presently. He knew the doctors had done the basic tests and Connor, by all accounts and reasoning, should be fine. But Oliver needed to make sure there was no doubt, and they weren’t leaving until he felt safer on the subject.
His eyes lifted over to Chloe's face and he held his breath for a moment as he watched her sleep, wondering how she dealt with these parental fears by herself for this long. Clutching his eyes closed, he took a deep breath and brushed his thumb over the back of Connor’s small hand.
“You think too loud,” he heard Chloe whisper, and he opened his eyes to see her staring at him with affection orbiting in her deep green eyes.
He gave her a weak smile, “I’m sorry if my loud thoughts woke you.”
Pushing herself up from the bed with her arm, Chloe glimpsed down at Connor, trying to look at his eyes. “Is he asleep?”
Oliver nodded, “Out like a light...” His eyes returned down to his hand that remained holding onto Connor’s and Chloe’s eyes followed his gaze. “How did you do it?”
Chloe’s brows lifted in confusion, “How did I do what?”
Oliver exhaled harshly to release the pressure on his pounding heart and from his burning lungs. “Live with the constant fear of not being able to protect him...”
Pursuing her lips, Chloe dropped her gaze to Connor, her voice falling to a whisper. “It was difficult at first...I mean it still is, but I guess with time you realize that you can't control everything... And you need to stop trying, and just deal with what comes."
Brushing her hand through Connor's hair again, she let out a sigh. "It doesn't get any less scary though, but believe it or not this is only the second time something like this has ever happened... We've been lucky." She glanced up at him and gave him a tired smile, voice soft, "I'm really glad you were here though..."
Nodding again, Oliver opened his mouth to speak, and he choked on his own words as if someone had suddenly laid a three-ton truck on his chest. “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to him... To both of you.”
Chloe gave a small nod in agreement, and glanced back down at Conner, voice quiet and slightly shaky when she spoke. "I know what you mean... Every time he gets sick or hurt it terrifies me. When I put the helmet on all those years ago--Out of everything I saw... I never saw Connor."
Chloe licked her lips to moisten them slightly as she continued speaking, hand moving against Connor's scalp softly, "And that scares me... I mean, what if that means he wasn't supposed to be born? What if something changed? What if Fate tries to take him away from me?"
She glanced up at him tears pooling in her eyes, "I was scared... That I would be punished for changing things when he was born... It's why I never came home after I had him..."
Oliver swallowed as he felt his throat constricting at her voicing her fears, “Chloe, thats--” He shook his head, and he wanted nothing more than to wrap his arms around her to comfort her, but feared removing his hand from Connor’s might wake him.
“Zatanna said the palms tell our fate, and you and Connor are my fate, Chloe.” He stared into her eyes without blinking, “He was meant to be ours.” He voiced strongly, but quietly.
Inhaling a deep breath, he steeled himself before he spoke his next words, “Chloe... Fate’s helmet...” He hesitated, unsure how she would react, and the last thing he wanted to do was upset her more, but she deserved to know their child had always belonged to them. He tried to remove the lump in his throat that only hindered his words, “It doesn’t--”
The doctor emerged into the room, clipboard in hand as he flipped through the results he got back from the tests. He glanced up and smiled, "Ms. Hawke, Mr. Queen,. I just wanted to let the two of you know everything is looking good. Connor's test results all came back fine... It was good you used the EpiPen when you did, and it seems it took full affect."
Chloe sat up gently and spoke softly, "When can we take him home?"
The doctor glanced between them eyes landing on Oliver as he answered her question, "I'm having the paperwork drawn up now so whenever you two are ready I'll have the nurse come in to help you guys out."
“Thank you,” Oliver nodded as the doctor excused himself and he felt Connor’s hand twitch in his. He cast his gaze down to look as their son slowly pried his eyes open. “Hey, buddy,” Oliver smiled down and turned to Connor fully. “Doctor says you’re good to go home.” He squeezed his hand firmly, “I’m so proud of you for being brave.”
Connor gave a sleepy, slanted smile, before glancing over his shoulder for his mom. “I’m sorry... I didn’t know there was peanut butter in the middle of the brownies...”
Chloe gave him a small smile and laughed before placing a kiss on his forehead. "You don't need to apologize... It's okay, you didn’t know and everything is fine now. We're gonna bring you home and you'll wake up tomorrow feeling as good as new." She shifted when she saw the nurse come in and moved off the bed fixing her outfit slightly before sitting in the seat next to Oliver, her hand automatically resting on his arm as the nurse gave them the papers and checked on Connor one last time.
Oliver’s eyes never left Connor as the nurse went over to his bedside and he sat up for her, answering her questions and Oliver turned to Chloe, “Do you want me to go pull the car around?”
She shifted her gaze to the man next to her and gave him a small smile, "Can you? It would be helpful... I'll get all his stuff together and we'll meet you out front?" She rubbed his arm gently, wanting nothing more than to climb into bed with him in her arms after the long day they'd had.
He moved his arm so his hand could take hers and he squeeze it gently, “Not a problem.” Smiling softly, he stood up from his chair and dug her keys out of her purse, “Let me know if you need me to take care of the bill.” He whispered, and moved to the door before she could protest, “Seriously, Chloe...”
Connor set up straighter in his bed to see around the nurse, “Wait...Where’s Ollie going?”
Chloe noted the hint of panic in their sons voice and her face softened as she moved her chair closer to him and reached out placing a comforting hand on his arm, voice calming, "He's going to bring the car around for us so we can all go home. We'll meet him outside as soon as you're all done here... Don't worry."
Connor stiffened, but nodded after he processed his mother’s words. He cast an impatient look to his nurse, waiting for her to get done so they could leave. When she took a step back from he glanced at his mom, “Are we good now?” He lifted his hand to rub the back of it over his eyes, “I wanna go back to bed...”
The nurse smiled at them and Chloe grinned at Connor, helping him off the bed and putting an arm around him. "We sure are kid." She glanced up sending a 'thank you' the nurse, and grabbed her things before moving with Connor out of the room. She steered him quietly to the nurses station, speaking with them for a couple of minutes before guiding their son down the hall to the elevator.
Less than ten minutes later they were walking out the rotating doors in the front of the hospital. Chloe caught sight of Oliver and nudged Connor towards the right pointing towards the car as she spoke, voice soft. "There's Ollie, come on." They made their way to the car and she opened the back door for Connor. He climbed in, resting his body back against the seat with a yawn.
Chloe shut his door before opening her own and getting in herself.. She glanced at Oliver and gave him a light smile, her hand falling to his arm as she angled her body towards him slightly, "Let's head home."
Oliver pulled the car away, and headed back to the house, settling into a comfortable silence in the car as he drove. He kept glancing from time to time in the rearview mirror to check on Connor, watching as their son yawned and fought to keep his head up to keep himself from falling asleep.
Pulling up in front of the house, Oliver switched the car off and turned to look into the backseat, finding Connor curled up and lying down, his eyes closed tightly as he slept.
He turned to Chloe and removed the keys from the ignition and handed them to her. "You go on ahead and open the door, and I'll grab him and carry him to his room."
She hesitated for a minute, not because she didn't trust Oliver with their son, but because she was still slightly shaken and didn't want to leave Connor's side. She bit her lip and nodded taking the keys from him and pushing open the car door slowly before moving towards the house. Chloe unlocked the door and moved inside, leaving it open and watching as Oliver went around the car, maneuvering Connor gently into his arms before kicking the door shut, and heading towards the house.
Oliver held Connor to his chest, with his hands secured on their son's small back as he slowly made his way into the house. Connor shifted and moved his arms up so that his hands could cling to Oliver's shirt, his hands balling info fists and gripping tightly as he rested his head on his shoulder, and in the crook of Oliver’s neck.
Holding onto him steadily, Oliver crossed into the house and started to head up the stairs with Chloe right behind him. Stepping into the dark room, Oliver laid Connor down on the bed gently and glanced over his shoulder at Chloe. "Did you want to change him into his pajamas?"
She nodded and moved to his dresser pulling out a pair of pajama bottoms and a shirt. Chloe moved to the bed carefully pulling off his shoes and undressing him slowly to try and keep from waking him. She had just finished pulling his shirt over his head when he scrunched his nose and popped an eye open at his mother. "Mom..."
Chloe smiled at the whine in his voice, chuckling lightly as she quickly put his pajama shirt on. "All done sweetie... Sorry. I didn't want you to have to sleep in your clothes. How are you feeling?"
He grumbled lightly while snuggling against her side for a second and closing his eyes, "Sleepy."
She brushed his hair aside, voice soft. "Well that's good cause it's so time for bed kid." Connor smirked against is mother’s side, eyes opening again nodding. "Did you call Nick?"
Chloe nodded, shifting slightly to glance at Oliver before looking back at Connor. "I did." She stood up and bent down placing a kiss against his forehead, "I love you."
"Love you too," Connor mumbled with a yawn.
Oliver leaned down to brush his hand on Connor's head affectionately, "Sleep tight, buddy." He moved to retract his hand when he felt Connor grab onto it, causing him to look down.
"Ollie..." Connor murmured softly, "Will you stay with me until I fall asleep?"
The soft and pleading tone in their sons voice struck his heart, and Oliver glimpsed at Chloe, asking for permission.
Chloe's eyes softened and she nodded before shifting forward and placing a light kiss against Oliver's cheek, voice light, "Thank you... For today." She stepped back and gave their son a small smile, before heading out of the room and going to change.
Connor had watched his Mother thank Oliver and instead of feeling the anger that he normally did when they were close it was replaced by something different. Something he wasn't sure he understood. He watched as Oliver pulled his desk chair closer to the bed and sat down in it next to him, once again taking his hand.
"Thank you," said Connor sincerely.
Oliver's eyes softened, "You don't have to thank me." He ran his other hand over Connor's hair again, trying to soothe him. "Just relax and try to rest."
Connor nodded and closed his eyes. He didn't fall asleep right away, instead he relaxed like Oliver had said, letting his breathing even out. He kept a good hold on Oliver's hand, hoping he didn't mistake his relaxed state for sleep, and pull his hand away to leave before Connor was really asleep. He never tried to leave though, and it made Connor feel safer and ultimately made it easier for him to fall asleep.
Oliver stayed by Connor's bedside until he was positive he had fallen asleep and could hear the light sound of his soft snoring with the sight of his chest rising, and falling in a safe rhythm. He pulled away slowly and gently, not wanting to disturb him and he ducked out of the room quietly.
He trailed down the hallway, retreating back to Chloe's room where he opened the door and slipped in. He shut the door before turning around to her, his eyes finding her in her bed and under her blankets.
"He's officially asleep." Oliver kicked off his shoes, "He seemed really scared today... How old was he the last time you had to use the EpiPen?" He pulled his shirt over his head and slid off his pants before walking over to the vacant side of her bed and joining her.
When he slipped under the covers she automatically reached out for him, her body molding into his side as he wrapped an arm around her and she let out a content sigh. Her voice was soft as she yawned before speaking, "He was most likely too young to remember... I believe it was a little after his second birthday... That time he had to stay over night at the hospital. I was terrified... It was a crazy twenty-four hours. Thankfully everything turned out okay."
She lifted her head slightly, placing a kiss on his jaw as her hands came up to rest on his chest, griping his body tightly. The strength of his arms on her making her release the tension in her muscles as his presence comforted her in ways she hadn't realized she missed.
She knew she was practically clinging to him, but she couldn't help it. Having him there this time had made a huge difference. Chloe needed him... And she was pretty sure that today Connor had realized that he needed Oliver too.
Oliver tightened his hold on her, dropping his lips to meet hers as he moved his mouth over hers leisurely. He pulled back enough to lean his forehead against hers as he swallowed and exhaled as calmly as possible to prepare himself for his next words. “Chloe... You mentioned you didn’t see yourself or Connor in my future...” One of his hands trailed up to cup the back of her head, his fingers unconsciously clutching her hair slightly. “Did you see us together at all? Even for a moment?”
Chloe pulled back slightly so she could see him, a hint of confusion on her face, "No... I saw a lot of things... A lot of it is kind of jumbled now, it's been a while. Having your head explode with tons of information is not exactly a pleasant experience, but no. I saw you with Dinah..."
Pausing, she licked her lips and glanced away from him, "It didn't show me when you left, or why... Just that you were with her... And then when I called you when I started to go into labor, and she answered..." Her voice trailed off and she sucked in a deep breathe trying to keep her emotions under control.
Chloe didn't want to mention how she'd cried for two days straight when she found out he'd proposed to Dinah. Her heart had broken that day. At that time she took it as a sign that he'd moved on for good and why shouldn't he? She'd left him... But at the time knowing that she still hadn't moved on from him and he was starting a new life without her had killed her.
Oliver lifted his hand from her hip to tuck a few golden stray strands of her hair behind her ear delicately. “You mentioned that before, but Dinah and I didn’t get together till long after you left.” His eyes fell, ashamed of what he was about to admit to, “Chloe, when you left that final time, I--”
Guilt began to surround him, and he tried to avoid her gaze so he didn’t have to see how disappointed she was going to be with him. “I slipped back into the old Oliver Queen... The one before you saved me from myself.” His hand fell back to cup her hip, but his eyes never moved up to meet hers, “I sunk back into drinking in between trying to find you and throwing myself into underground criminal rings... Trying to figure out if someone took you.”
His throat tightened, and he swallowed in an attempt to reach for a coaxing breath as he lifted his gaze back up to hers, “I didn’t care what happened to me as long as I found you or got justice for you...” The almond brown in his eyes seemed to darken slightly, “Unfortunately that meant the team was left to pick me up whenever I ended up too broken or bleeding with critical injuries... I feel awful that they had to take care of me; to see me in that state...”
The volume of his voice started to dissipate with shame, “They had to take turns looking after me and the city... And they shouldn’t have been in that position.” His eyes hardened as his hand slid from the back of her head to cup her cheek, “But I swear Dinah and I were not together, not before you left, and definitely not within the first few years of Connor’s life.”
He paled slightly as the small hairs on the back of his neck stood up when horrible thought struck him in all the way down to his gut, and he hated to ask, but needed to know the answer. “Did Dinah know you called? Did she speak to you that night?”
Chloe swallowed hard her heart clenching, guilt filling her at the mess she had caused by leaving. She shook her head quickly, voice quiet, "No...I was at the hospital... I was in labor and I was emotional... The minute I heard her voice I got angry... Not that I had any right to..." She shrugged slightly, her hand clenching around his arm slightly, "So I hung up."
Oliver dropped his head into the crook of her neck, relieved Dinah had played no role in keeping Chloe and Connor from him, and he momentarily felt guilty for jumping to the wrong conclusion. Shaking off his guilt, he turned his head to face Chloe’s neck, and placed a soft kiss just over her pulse. He pulled back, and away enough so that he could see her and his expression saddened.
“Chloe,” he licked his lips nervously, his heart slamming against his ribcage like a wild bird trying to break free from an imprisoned cage. “Did you know Fate’s helmet allowed whoever wore it to see every future but their own?”
Her body immediately tensed at his words and for a minute she thought she might have heard him wrong. She pulled back further and caught the nervous look on his face as her heart sped up in her chest. No... That couldn't be right. She wracked her brain trying to remember if she'd ever seen herself in the future, but nothing came to her.
If what Oliver was saying was true... That would mean that there was a chance she could have been a part of his future and not known it. And with that thought Chloe was suddenly sick to her stomach. She opened and closed her mouth, tears pooling in her eyes as she shook her head, "No... That's... That can't be true... How?--How do you know that?"
Oliver shifted closer to her, wrapping his arms around her for support, "Kent Nelson told Carter..." He swallowed, hesitant to keep going. "He told Carter the helmet showed everyone’s fate but his own."
His hold on her tightened, hoping she wouldn't pull away from him, "What if you saw me with Dinah in the future because that was the future that would happen when you left me?"
Her whole body went rigid as his words settled around her. Her stomach sank as bile rose in her throat, the thought that everything that she'd been through over the years, everything he'd been through was all because of a stupid misunderstanding making her physically ill.
She paled, heart beat pounding in her ears. This was all her fault. Nearly seven years he lost out on all because of her. First words, first steps... The family she knew he always wanted and he missed so much.
Chloe felt a sharp weight on her chest, the intense emotions inside of her bubbling over and suffocating her. She let out a broken sob and pulled away from him, sitting up, but not leaving his side as she shook her head.
Tears falling from her eyes rapidly as she tried not to get hysterical, "This is all my fault... All this time I thought you belonged with her... That Fate had different plans for us..."
Another sob left her throat as she covered her mouth not able to look at him, "Why are you even here with me, Oliver? I did this--I'm the reason you missed out on seven years of Connor's life... We could have been a family... How can you not hate me?"
Chloe gripped her stomach, voice barely a whisper, "I hate me..."
Oliver pushed himself up from the bed and reached out to pull her closer, "I can't hate you, Chloe. I love you." He wrapped her in his arms, "What happened... To say it was all unfortunate is an understatement, but we're together now, and nothing is going to change that." He tilted her head back and pressed his lips to hers in a crushing kiss.
"We can't leave everything to Fate, Chloe..." Oliver dropped his forehead to rest against hers as his fingers combed through her hair, "We'll make our own fate if we have to."
Chloe shook her head wrapping her arms around his neck and shifting so she was straddling his lap as she buried her head into his neck, a few stray tears still making there way down her cheeks.
Her voice was mumbled against his neck, but he could hear her words clearly, "I'm so sorry, Ollie... You have to know if I had known about Fates helmet... I would never have left--I swear... These past seven years... I've been so broken without you. The only thing that kept me together was Connor."
Chloe placed a light kiss against his neck, her arms still around him tightly, "I'll make it up to you... I'll do whatever I can, and I know that doesn't mean much... But there's never been anyone but you. I've known since that whole checkmate debacle that this... You and me... We were it for me."
She pulled back slightly cupping his cheek her thumb caressing it lightly, "I love you more than I've ever loved anyone...You need to know that."
Oliver clung to her tightly, "I know." His hand cradled her neck as he brushed his thumb over her skin, "You are it for me, Chloe... I know you think I moved on before but I was just going through the motions."
He stared into her eyes sincerely, with a solemn expression, "Please don't doubt how much I love you, again." He shook his head, "I can't lose you again."
She looked down for a minute before glancing up and nodding, "I get it... I left... It's not like I could expect you to..." Her voice trailed off and she bit her lip before shrugging, "I understand. What's in the past can stay there all I care about is where we go from here... We can start over, and this time nothing is going to keep us apart... I won't let it. I was us to be a family, Ollie... I want my hero back--My partner in crime-fighting."
Chloe pressed a kiss against his lips and then moved her mouth towards his ear, voice soft as she spoke her breath caressing his skin. "I've lived my life without you, and it's not something I ever want to experience again now that I have you back. I don't know what I would have done if you didn't find us--If you hadn’t forgiven me..." Her grip on him tightened slightly as she rested her head against his shoulder.
His arms slid around her back as he clutched her tightly to him, "I want us to be a family too, more than anything." He inhaled a shaky breath, fearing he would upset her more, "What do we tell Connor tomorrow?--If he asks why I wasn't around..."
She paused before letting out a long breath, "We tell him the truth. He'll most likely already be upset with me for keeping it from him the whole time you've been here..."
Chloe knew it was very possible that their son would be furious with her... Especially now that she knew he'd been thinking about his father more than she thought. She couldn't let Oliver take the fall for something that was her fault though, especially when it seemed like Connor was finally starting to open up and connect with Oliver.
"We tell him I never told you..." Her voice trailed off and she shrugged slightly before looking away from him already resigning herself to the fact that this was her fault and accepting the consequences to her actions.
She deserved whatever she got... After all, it was her fault Connor went almost seven years without a father and if he was going to blame someone for that... Well, all she had to do was look in a mirror.
Oliver tilted her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes, "You thought you were protecting him."
She gave him a sad smile, her eyes watering again slightly as she spoke, "It's not going to matter, Oliver... He won't understand, and it's not as if we can actually explain what I thought I was protecting him from... Just... It's been a long day... And I'm tired... Can we just get some sleep?"
Oliver leaned in and placed a kiss to her temple, "Yeah." He shifted to lay back down, his arms never releasing her as she molded her frame into his, "But it'll be okay... Connor knows you love him, and we'll make sure he knows we never stopped loving each other."
She squeezed her eyes shut to keep the tears from coming as she nodded, her head moving against his chest. Her voice was quiet when she spoke, hands gripping onto him tightly, "He already knows I've never stopped loving his father, he just doesn't realize it's you."
Oliver ran his hand over her hair in slow movements, "Well, he already knows I love you." He kissed her again slowly, trying to convey both how thankful he was, and that everything would be fine, and that she could trust him to see to that.
Reclining his head into the pillows, he shut his eyes, his fingers still coiled in Chloe's hair as he let out a content sigh. A minute later a faint buzzing made it's way to his ears and he cracked one eye open, "What the...?"
Chloe groaned, shifting her face to hide in his shoulder, "Make it stop."
Oliver squinted in the darkness of the room, trying to figure out where it was coming from. The tone was muffled, but it definitely sounded as if it was coming from the floor. Remembering his cell phone had been in his jacket pocket, he stifled a yawn and nestled against Chloe's body again, "Whoever it is will give up."
The phone stopped and then seconds later started ringing yet again. She grunted shoving him gently, "Ollie... Just answer it, they obviously aren't stopping."
Oliver let out a low growl in compliance and slid out from under her, annoyed at whoever was calling. Bending down on the floor, he picked through his clothes, searching for the incessant ringing phone. Finding his leather jacket, he dug through his pockets until he was grasping his sleek black phone.
He flipped it open, seeing the screen blink 'twelve missed calls'. He skimmed through the call list, catching Vic, and most recently Hal's names, and an even more surprising name on the list of missed calls from earlier that had caused his eyebrows to draw back, was Clark’s name.
His phone went off again, Hal's number flashing across the screen and he hit talk, bringing the phone to his ear, "You are aware of our time differences, right?"
Hal took in the irritation in his friends voice and he grunted, "Obviously... And you didn't think that if I was calling even knowing the time difference that it might be an emergency? Where the hell have you been?" His tone was sharp, and he took a deep breath to control his anger.
He wasn't mad at Oliver and he hadn't meant to snap, but it had been a long day and this wasn't the first time he had attempted to call Oliver. Hell, Victor had tried before him and their friend was still unreachable. "We've got an issue."
Oliver froze at Hal's tone, "Sorry I missed your calls, Connor had an allergic reaction and we were at the hospital, I must not have had reception."
"What's going on?" He tried to blink away his confusion and sleep deprivation, "What kind of issue?"
Hal let out a long sigh and winced as he shifted in his seat, "We were attacked by the Dark Archer today, Oliver." He cleared his throat as not looking forward to what he had to tell his friend. "He got me while I was coming home and before you ask; I'm fine. No harm, no foul. Victor wasn't as lucky... The bastard managed to shoot his wires."
He ran a hand through his hair as he continued speaking voice softer than before, "He attacked him on his way into Watchtower. He's with Emil now and he's stable... The doc’ is pretty confident he'll be okay." He hesitated briefly before blowing out a heavy breath. "Also... Oracle called from Gotham? Canary was attacked by him too, but I was told she's going to be fine."
Oliver suddenly felt pale as all the blood rush from his face when his heart froze at Hal's words, "Dark Archer? Why did he attack you?"
“Because,” Hal swallowed heavily, voice hoarse as he spoke softly. "He wanted information about your son, Oliver."
