hey y'all, I'm applying for the Central Hockey league's job fair to be held in APril. It works like the ECHL one, you have to be selected to participate, so I'm trying to submit my resume and such. This is the coverletter I have, does it look okay? Should I add anything? Take anything away? Any awkward wordage? **Keep in mind that this is not applying for any specific position, though I am leaning toward communications/media or community development/public relations kinda stuff**
Any suggestions and comments/criticisms are welcome and accepted. Thanks!
I am writing to you because I would like to be considered for the 2007 CHL Job Fair. I have been an avid hockey fan for twelve years, and closely followed the minor leagues for five years, so I know how hockey fans think and what they want to see, on and off the ice. This gives me an "insider edge" and enthusiasm that I can use to my advantage on the business side of the game, through public and media relations, and community outreach programs.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communications, which provided a broad education in the communications field, touching on everything from journalism to graphic design, with an emphasis on broadcasting. During my time at Wright State University, I hosted a weekly radio show, and worked with the club hockey team doing game day activities and promotions. After graduation, I took a position in the Media Relations Department of Niagara University, which allowed me to see the workings of a D-I Athletic Program and assist in game-day duties for many sports. I worked with the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL for eleven months, and held a variety of positions concurrently, but the Media and Community Relations work were the ones that I enjoyed most. I assisted the Director of Media Relations by writing game stories for the away games which we published on the website and distributed to various media outlets. Additionally, I wrote and conducted short player interviews which were recorded and played back during the gameday radio broadcast. As the co-director of the Grizzlies Community Relations Department, I was in charge of scheduling and conducting the Elementary School Assembly Program which involved player and mascot appearances to local schools and encouraging the students to attend a game. I learned about many aspects of the business of hockey, and I am ready to take that experience and apply it to an established program to make it even better.
I am motivated, energetic, a fast learner, and always looking for creative ways to implement new ideas. I would love to be a part of a Central Hockey League team, and look forward to the opportunity to help promote hockey all over the country. I have enclosed a resume. If you wish to discuss anything further, or if you have any questions, you may contact me by telephone at (------or by e-mail at s-a-michel@hotmail.com. Thank you for your time.
