Okay, so I have been reading a few chapters a night to Liam from the Harry Potter series. We got completely through Year 1 and then watched the movie and have begun Chamber of Secrets. He's really excited about them and is enjoying spotting the differences between the books and the movies. Basically, I'm trying to get him excited about reading fiction, as the only thing he seems to want to read is reference books. I think it's working, because he finally started bringing home some chapter books from the library.
Anyway...
Abigail has begun to grow jealous.
I still think she is too young for some of the darker themes in the books, so I've promised to read them again with her when she's a bit older. Of course, that doesn't go over well; and I understand her point. Liam is getting a lot of extra time and attention and I should spread that around.
In an effort to be fair, I pick a smaller chapter book which I thought she'd like, The Secret Garden.
I'd only read the book once or twice, and um... completely forgot that it starts off with the tragic deaths of every one of Mary's family from cholera leaving her abandoned and forgotten in India. Oh, and in case that's not horrible enough, it's heavily implied they all died and hated her because she was a brat and ugly. Add some racism, classism and a deformed uncle, and we've got a children's classic everyone will love.
So much for avoiding those darker themes.
Yep. Parenting skills. I've got 'em.
