A Novel Idea

I think I'm gonna start an Indie scene in the literature world. It's really the only medium where they haven't started one yet.

Like take music for example. If you look at the music industry, there's like a whole indie, underground music scene. These are bands who make and distribute music outside of the major record labels. They mostly get popular by touring at small venues around the country and selling cds at their shows. Or they'll put up their music on the internet, and then just kind of build popularity by word of mouth. Any plus Indie music is its own genre of music. It's usually an alternative band that’s either some underground hip hop group, or some emo/punk/mod squad band with an establishing "THE" in front of their one word name. (SEE: Kills, Killers, Strokes, Spokes, Shins, and Fins.)

And then, there are the movies. There's obviously a huge Indie scene there. Indie movies are movies made outside of the mainstream Hollywood studio system. They are made cheap and they are shown at festivals where they also gain popularity by word of mouth. And they are also all made a certain kind of way. Like music, there is an Indie genre in cinema. This usually consists of no-name actors performing in front of a camera positioned at weird angles that you don’t normally position a camera at. And then the movie is filled with mostly obscure music by bands with an establishing “THE” in front of their one word name…..or Radiohead.

But books. I mean there's no Indie world for books. I know there are small company's that publish books outside of the giant publishing companies, but there isn't really a scene. There isn't a genre of writing that you would see the title or you would read the first chapter and think< "damn that was some Indie writing.” You’ve never heard of anyone pushing the envelope in a book. So I feel like because no one has really considered to start a scene, I could easily get into it and popularize it. And it’s an easy thing to start cuz it has the lowest barriers of entry. I mean, it’s not like I’m tryin to start something to compete with the big boys. I just want to fill the void that the literature scene is missing. And because it’s Indie, it would be accepted if I made my books really low budget and kind of raw. Like, I could write a short story on a bunch of napkins with a recycled pencil. And the I could stand in the street and try to give them out. Or I could go to some small venue like…a library….and have a show in the back corner. And obviously there would be a whole culture that comes with it. Like the other scenes, people would wear really tight shirts that are brightly colored with some really obscure logo or image on the front.

Plus it would be a really cool scene cuz it would be real. See, since Indie movies and music are considered cool, everyone wants to attach themselves to it so they can be cool too. But like its really easy to go see a movie or listen to a song and be like<” yea I liked that” and talk about it and act all smart and above the masses. But with books its different. Cuz like books are hard to get through. And only smart people really read a lot anyways. Everyone sees movies and listens to music already. So that means right away you’ve got the smart sophisticates flocking to the scene. And then the cool ones will stick with it and kind of push it forward to be more progressive and edgy. The posers just won’t even bother cuz they’ll be all like,” uch, I don’t feel like reading.” And they’ll just stick with pretending like they’re big movie and music buffs cuz it’s easier.

I dunno whatever, I’m gonna do it.
