The sky turns purple.
A storm rolls in and through the thick clouds the sky colors violet. And she remembers the last time it did that and, just like back then, she knows it means something bad, she just doesn’t know what.
She didn’t believe her own eyes at first. It must be something with the windows she thought, until she went outside. Through the lightning and the sheets of rain she can see that, no, her eyes and tinted glass are not deceiving her.
Purple like plums and eggplant in the waning days of summer, just before everything starts to die. Purple like the amethyst stone in the necklace her sister used to wear, the one she took off before her surgery and never put back on.
Purple like the end of the world.
Her eyes find the people around her who’ve also come out of their houses, the people who wanted to be here. The people who thought they knew better.
“Do you still think you made the right choice?” She yells to everyone and no one, straining to be heard over the rain. Locke just looks up at the sky like he wants to ask why things aren’t going his way. Only Sawyer looks down, regret in his eyes.
No one answers; no one contests.
Everyone waits.
