At some point they got a little too involved, a little too close to passing that ‘just friends trying to help each other out’ line that really doesn’t have a distinctive end. Because sometimes, oftentimes, friends will do a lot to help out friends.

Like helping them lie to their husbands. Or holding them when they cry.

The kiss that almost was - well he’s not sure which side of the line that falls. He’s not sure how to interpret that.

He’s also not sure where to go from there.

Michael can remember, vaguely, the first time he saw her. Really saw her. Not just saw her on the beach somewhere or ran into her when he was trying to find his son. When she was cleaning up in the jungle and thought no one was there. And it’s not that he saw her topless that makes it stick out (or, it’s not just that). What he really remembers is the way her skin shimmered in the sun, fresh and clean, the perfect shade, water droplets glittering on bare shoulders.

He thought she was beautiful.

He also thought she was perfect. He knows now that that was a misconception.

No one is perfect on this island.

She slaps him, calls it protecting him, from Jin nonetheless, like he can’t hold his own, and he wonders how this went downhill so fast.

He figures that means that they really did cross that line, and she’s merely trying to backtrack. Because this? This is never going anywhere good. Especially not once he makes friends with Jin.

“Don’t let him go with you.”

She’s pleading, and following him down this empty stretch of beach. He can’t ignore the desperation in her voice. “Why not?”

“It’s too dangerous.”

“I see, so you don’t want him to go, but me and Walt and Sawyer, we’re just expendable.”

“That is not what I said.”

Michael almost laughs. He doesn’t know what else he expected. “No, but it’s what you meant.”

She doesn’t follow him after that; resorts to other measures.

Other measures that wind up ending badly for him.

Jin’s her husband, and he understands that, always has. But he doesn’t understand the lies. He doesn’t understand why she let them get this far, cross that line, if she loves Jin as much as she claims she does. The whole thing is just one big conundrum for him.

What he does understand is that she isn’t perfect. She’s just as bad as he is. As anyone else is.

Somehow, that makes it worse.
