My Top 10 episodes of LOST

May 24, 2010 16:06

Now that "Lost" is over after 121 episodes, we can all probably agree that there isn’t any one secret. That there is not a unified field theory for Lost, nor do we think there should be.

Regardless, it is the end of an era and TV history is made.

For record sake, here is my Top 10 episodes of LOST (the finale not counted)

10) "Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1): One of the best pilots ever produced, introducing 14 characters with an ease. Sadly, many other shows tried and couldn't, so this pilot stands alone.

9) "Happily Ever After" (Season 6, Episode 10): It's rare that one episode of TV can crystallize a whole season and make it make sense by the time the finale swings about, but this one did as Desmond journeyed to the flash-sideways universe and had a vision of a friend's death and a woman's love that caused him to find a new purpose. Swooningly romantic and evocatively shot, this is the possibly the most crucial hour of the final season. If you cannot remember this episode, watch it again before the finale. Then, everything will make sense.

8) "There's No Place Like Home" (Season 4, Episodes 12 and 13): There are some fantastic moments here, like Penny's boat showing up or the island disappearing, the freighter exploding, Michael's death. Jin's staus uncertain..woah

7) "... In Translation" (Season 1, Episode 16): Before Desmond and Penny came along, the story of how Sun and Jin rediscovered their love was the best romance on the show.

6) "Ji Yeon" (Season 4, Episode 7): A tricky and excellently created structure with Jin who isin flashback, and Sun who is in flash-forward. By the time you realize this, the episode's deeply emotional heart hits you harder that Jin was dead all along. This is how deception can hit you hard and leaves you distraught.

5) "Exodus" (Season 1, Episodes 23 and 24): The finest hour of the debut season, this finale contains moments soaring with hope -- the launch of the raft -- and full of despair -- the Others seizing Walt. In a way, the story of the series begins here, and everything that came up until this point was just a long prologue. A 22 hour pilot!

4) "Ab Aeterno" (Season 6, Episode 8): It wasn't everybody's favorite, but the show's journey back to the 1800s gave the series an epic, romantic sweep it rarely has. Furthemore, I'm a sucker for the Latin gimmick.

3) "The Candidate" (Season 6, Episode 13): This one has some heart-rending moments -- Said, Sun and Jin's death, anyone? The Sun and Jin death scene on it's own will go down in my memory as one of the saddest moments on TV..and Jin never met Ji Yeon! What a tragedy!

2) "Through the Looking Glass" (Season 3, Episode 22): Coming at a time when the series needed to prove it wasn't just a one-trick pony, "Lost" unveiled the biggest twist in its history: Some of the castaways got off the island. And now they had to go back.

1) "The Constant" (Season 4, Episode 5): Desmond and Penny's story became the heart of "Lost" so quickly that it's easy to forget they weren't always there. This episode, climaxing with a phone call that was as moving as anything the show had done. "The Constant" is an hour of pretty heavy science-fiction, what with the time travel, but it's also an hour that wears a full, beating heart on its sleeve!

I like Desmond, Jin and Sun very much, so I am probably biased.

So here's to LOST! There would probably never be another show like it again.
