5-Day Challenge: Day 1

Mar 31, 2011 17:37

I have a few of these "X-Day" memes, but for now, I'm going to start small and see if I can complete this one first.

5 DAY CHALLENGE
1. 5 facts about you
2. 5 people you can't live without
3. 5 phobias
4. 5 songs you never get tired of
5. 5 goals

I'm going to try and pick some random things that people might not know about me...

1. I love to cross-stitch. It's a hobby that I got into almost twenty years ago and that I revisit sporadically. I go through periods where I do a few hours every night for a few months, and then I drop it entirely for months. As a result, it sometimes takes me a couple of years to finish a really ambitious project (like the one I'm currently working on). I find it very calming (except when I go through an entire strand to find out that I miscounted on the first row), and I really enjoy the finished product. However, I don't consider what I do "art" given that I'm not creating an original piece, just following someone else's directions.

2. I once played Puck in a bizarre musical version of Midsummer Night's Dream. This was part of a summer drama program back when I was in middle school. It was a much abridged version of the play interspersed with a couple of original songs written for the production. What made it bizarre was that it was decided to stage it in an ultra-futuristic setting. The costumes were all shiny mylar based (think 1950's Flash Gordon type things), the stage decoration was sparse, but consisted of strangely shaped metallic trees and plants with a raised platform in the middle. Still, it was a lot of fun to be part of, especially at that age.

3. I enjoy collecting tarot card decks. I also really enjoy doing tarot readings. Not so much as a divination tool, but more as a meditative aid. When I (or someone around me) feels directionless, I find that a tarot spread can inspire new directions of thought and consideration on the topic that might otherwise have been overlooked.

4. I hate black licorice. Which probably isn't that interesting; it's one of those things that most people either love or hate. I'm definitely a hater. There's no particular reason why. I just seriously detest the taste. And not just licorice itself but anything with that anise-y flavor. However, I don't mind fennel so long as it's cooked well because that medicinal flavor really mellows.

5. When I get hiccups, I've got them for the day. I pick this one because I was struggling to find a fifth obscure fact, and then coughed and started hiccuping. I can sometimes get them to stop by holding my breath until I nearly pass out, but one wrong swallow, cough, or burp, and they start right back up again. And they are painful. After only a few minutes, my chest starts to hurt, and I usually end up with aches in my neck, shoulders, and arms as well because of how violent the convulsions are.
