While watching Glee, it helps to remember that Glee Logic does not resemble our Earth logic. I love my show (but really, must we wait so long to set a set list---or even write the songs?) While I realize that the show features so many different numbers as a plot point, as a reason to sell cds/mp3s, and by sheer Schuester-ing, it seems to me that there are several performances that had they been reprised for competition, could have done just as well as what the group performed---or even won it all. So I present my top 10 “could have been a contender” list!
True Colors isn’t a number with flashy choreography (I actually don’t think sitting on stools counts as choreography, actually), but it’s a strong number. It’s refreshing to hear Tina take the lead on the song, and the background vocals are solid. It’s a number with a lot of heart, and nobody does heart better than New Directions.
Firework is a song that is uplifting. This number is a showstopper- and after seeing it performed live this summer on tour, I know that this song would blow the judges (and the competition) away.
Somebody to Love is a group number that makes you smile. It’s got good choreography, and it’s a moment in the show where we saw the group come together and truly shine. With standout parts for Rachel, Mercedes, and Finn, it’s surely to win over judges.
Face it Warblers, Teenage Dream just might have been your best moment. (A bunch of people on I-tunes can’t be wrong!) This song brought Blaine into our lives, and won Kurt’s (and our) hearts while he was at it. The songs the Warblers performed were good, but nothing is going to be quite as awesome as this song---at least to me.
To me, Glee’s version of “Bad Romance” puts Gaga’s to shame (shock and horror, I know, right?) It’s a smaller group number, and the costumes are awesome. Plus I really love Quinn’s outfit here- TRUFAX.
While the outfits of Born This Way aren’t as flashy as “Bad Romance”, they’re kind of awesome. (I still haven’t figured out what my shirt would say, but I’m thinking maybe HOBBIT, because I am short. Thoughts?) This number was strong and awesome….and again, it truly is awesome live.
Rumour Has It/Someone Like You is my favorite Troubletones number. And maybe they did perform it, since the show only showed us one Troubletones number, but THREE New Directions numbers. Survivor/I Will Survive was good too, but this Adele number was classy, slick, and wonderful.
Maybe it was the drugs that made It’s My Life/Confessions Part II wonderful, but it was also the awesome dancing by Mike Chang, and an excellent mash-up. This is still one of the most popular songs on my Itunes, for sure.
Everything is more awesome with Zombies. I’ve always loved Thriller, though the music video scared the heck out of me when I was little, and adding in “Heads Will Roll” just makes the song BETTER. Yeah, the special effects and makeup might make this unlikely to be put in competition- and the logistics of using the marching band---but really, this number is amazing and awesome. Plus wouldn’t you love to see New Directions pysch out Vocal Adrenaline by saying “BRAINS”?
Loser Like Me is a signature song. And while I liked “Light up the World” a lot, I think this song would have been a better choice for Nationals. It has props, and heart, and truly-it would have wiped the floor with “As Long As You’re There”. The fact that they had performed the song before and not just composed it might have helped too. (Though truly, the T-Rex eating the Jew might have kept New Directions out of competition anyway- says the dyed in the wool Finchel shipper.) Maybe they should have done this song instead of “Pretending.” *shrugs*
