This Day in History.... September 11.

Sep 11, 2008 09:47

1. Irony first: in 1609 Henry Hudson discovers the island of Manhattan.

2. In 1297 the Scots defeat the English in the Battle of Stirling Bridge. If you've seen Braveheart you know that William Wallace gets disemboweled anyway.

3. Irony second: ground is broken in 1941 for the Pentagon.

4. In 1961 Hurricane Carla struck the Texas coast as a Category 4, the strongest to ever hit the state. Keep your fingers crossed for Ike as it lumbers toward Galveston.

5. The Ford Pinto is introduced in 1970. Is that the one that exploded if rear-ended?

6. In 1973 the CIA-backed coup in Chile puts Pinochet in power for 17 years. And that worked out well for Chile, didn't it?

7. Irony third: In 1773, Benjamin Franklin's satirical essay, Rules By Which A Great Empire May Be Reduced To A Small One, is published. This one is just sad in a modern context.

8. In 1998, independent counsel Kenneth Starr sends his report to Congress accusing Bill Clinton of eleven impeachable offenses. Seriously. And we can't even touch Bush and Cheney? Ridiculous.

9. In 1977, TV's Rhoda gets her divorce.

10. In 1883, James Cutler patents the mail chute. There is a joke in there somewhere...

I know something else happened this day, I just can't put my finger on it.
