Ooh I love Kim Salmon.
Problem is that I was thinking that very opening as I booted up the computer, got distracted and have just discovered (after several emails and a bit o work stuff) my rather tepid and well-stewed cup of tea on the kitchen bench. Still, it makes this bloody awful mini hot cross bun edible.
Where was I ?
Ah yes!!
School is back tomorrow - hooray but what a tease to only have one day of freedom!
I’m feeling suitably refreshed after many mornings of sleep-ins and a break from the regular grind. The kids have worked out if they sleep in rather than get up at dawn they are likely to be able to stay up later. The bloke is in his new job which adds another hour or so to his travel time, but it is at least seeming to keep him (un)happy (ie - he’s never happier when he’s not) and challenged. It also means he started back at work two weeks ago, instead of the week after the kids go back to school as he usually does, which puts a fair hole in my rather limited daytime bonking schedule for the year, but also means I’ll get a shit lot more done. Without him around I am possibly ten times more productive, which is good as I’ve got so many unfinished objects flying around I’m starting to lose track!
Freaking kiln had to go to Sydney for a new electronic controller, I can’t say it has weathered the experience well. Since the trip up and back it has done woefully at consistently firing the base metals, and I’m really not all that impressed with the thought of replacing it as it’s still fine to use for silver, which isn’t nearly as finicky as bronze which has a tolerance of only 50 degrees. I’m still attempting to teach copper, as that is seeming to behave itself, but by the end of last year I was contemplating chucking the whole base metal thing in as nearly everyone else I know has. Have a class at the end of the month, and if it causes grief, that is it!
Had an awful night in town last Friday. It was the last 20/20 match, so after dispatching the two cricket buffs off to the G, I took the remaining two (“I’d rather gouge my own eyes out with spoons than sit through another cricket match!”) looking for those last minute text books and got caught up in a bunch of kids barneying on Swanston St. Don’t like the crack breaking bones make, or having the kids view that kind of shit in the flesh, either. And we didn’t get the book were after to boot.
However, Monday night made up for it. After weathering the usual car wars through the jam packed streets of the city to collect the bloke from its sweltering depths, we landed in Richmond and discovered the usual curry den was closed, and so it was into a nice reasonably priced Thai restaurant we swanned, the wine much cheaper than the Corners'.
We had tix to see the Jim Jones Review, and it turns out our Kim was supporting them. I’ve heard Kim play a fair bit, but always instrumental, as part of the Darling Downs with Ron Peno, and Salmon. Knew about the Scientists, Surrealists, Beasts etc but never really tuned in. Turns out he can sing. Funny that! I’m looking forward to hearing more of Precious Jules, his new project. Where the Salmon sound was huge with numerous guitars and drums, PJ is pared back to one guitar (Kim) one drum (Mike Stranges) and a helluva lot of hair. One of the plusses of living so close to Melbourne is that occasionally you can steal in and savour the good times and escape the smog while you still have your lungs intact. I’ll get a photo posted here one day, but when you’re in the city you don’t notice all the shite that blows over from the power stations. There is nothing like getting home and stepping out of the car and just breathing in…
Jim Jones and Co rocked, btw. Freakin showmanship plus, great music, I’ll buy into his RockNRoll psychosis any day!
Christmas being the time of bountiful inspired gifts that often go wrong, we’ve tix to Jethro Tull, also have tix to DC3’s debut Melbourne show in a few weeks and as a peace offering for the Tull (old and dull last time apparently. Still, he won’t let me stick the tix on ebay! At least we are likely to be some of the younger members in the crowd for once.) I scored us tickets to a Food Odyssey with Rick Stein at the Regent. Now that is likely to be a bit of fun. Right in the middle of the front row...
