Fat checking now required at New York schools

New York really is the 'nanny state.' It's no wonder many parents just don't bother about their kids. I mean, they seem to get less and less control over them. This 'fat check' is just ridiculous.

1. Body Mass Index no way tells the entire story. You just have to look at all those NFL and rugby players to know that.

2. More tax payer money will be required for the time and labour spent doing these tests

3. Self-esteem issues much? I might have been a stick, but I've experienced how cruel kids can be.

4. What will happen if it's determined that the kid's BMI isn't decreasing? Will the parent now be charged with child abuse?

I believe in healthy lifestyles. I believe kids should be encouraged to get out and exercise. I HATED PE at school but I had to endure 2 hours of it every week.

Furthermore, when I was going to school, I really did walk to and from a lot of the time. Even when my parents drove me, they parked on a side street to which I had to walk. Oh yeah, and neither of them drove until I was 9 anyway. My school had corridors and stairs and we sure didn't have lockers.

But my parents also liked walking and we did that at weekends and holidays. In Kingston, mother and I used to regularly walk from our house to Hampton Court or Kew. In Yorkshire, we explored the Dales. At one point in time, I could tell you exactly how many steps Malham Cove had. (I think it's about 112.) My father still walks as part of his job (tourist guide in York) and my mother wishes she could walk. Of course, parents these days feel they have little control because the State is taking over!

Seriously, New York. Get real! Don't put our money into a problematic calculation. Teach our children, and leave it at that!
