‘Nick Ballard’ actor Jan Rubes dead at 89
I remember him from SG-1, but it wasn't until I read the obit, that I learned Rubes was actually in one of my favourite movies, Witness. He played Eli Lapp who said the line that has stuck in my head for as long as I can remember:
"John Book. You be careful out among the English."
Lancaster County became a major destination after that movie. Even my great-aunt and uncle visited a few years later. I visited the area just once, although I've passed through it many times. I see the Amish in the smaller areas, such as Sugar Grove at the other side of Pennsylvania. I remember marveling at the little Amish boy in the store as he went to the cooler for a Pepsi. A group of girls playing by the school house on Saturday waved at Heath as he went by on his mountain bike. Witness might have introduced me to the community, but it's the members I see in Sugar Grove that have taught me more.
Regardless, I have taken Eli Lapp's advice on many an occasion. We do live in a dangerous world and there are times I appreciate the Amish way of life.
