quick update
Today has involved sleeping late, censored things, breakfast, test driving and late lunch. Test driving for Matt that is; we like the Mitsubishi Outlander, and the huge warranty, a LOT. Big points for stellar customer service despite short staffing, too.
Dad says the brakes are doing the "warning" squealing, not the "oh dear you should have looked into this ages ago" squealing. So I am more open to replacing if I am looking at just pads vs replacing the entire front end. Still, time to start saving. Dad has been super ill these past couple days so it will happen soon, as opposed to right away.
