Tonight, Joanne O'Connor and yours truly are going to watch 'Brick'.
Jo hasn't seen it but I have and it's one of the coolest modern Film Noir's ever.
I would be lying if I said Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character isn't everything I aspire to be in life - hate-filled, misanthropic, well-read, well-versed in 50's P.I. slang, and able to take a punch and fight like a tough, skinny nerd. I'm looking forward to watching this film again.
On the weekend I watched 'Shoot 'Em Up' starring Clive Owen, with Monica Bellucci's chest and amazing French-Italian accent also making an appearance as well as Paul Giamatti as a really evil and sleazy bad guy, with a personality I can only describe as 'obese' for some reason.
So the name of this movie should say it all - It's an action movie that is so deliberately cliché that it put a smile on my face at every turn. They really don't make movies like this anymore where the good guy kills every bad guy in a scene where he's literally outnumbered fifty to one, then has a slightly less suave than James Bond pun to make after expelling the last bullet. Some of my favourites were "So much for wearing a seatbelt" and "Talk about shooting your load". Genius. Go and see this movie.
Oh yeah and I hate pretty much everyone and everything but fortunately there are quite a lot of people/things that still have me enjoying life. It may seem unfounded to be so hate-filled but I particularly target my anger at most people my age or slightly older/younger who are more concerned with their appearance, social calendar and text messages than the current situation of global politics, future sustainability or human rights in even our own country. Sometimes I hate myself for slipping into this category and acting selfish or ignorant, but I'm thinking more and more all of the time about what I can do to make some kind of impact in the world. Not on any large scale of course, but just to be able to do what I think I am good at as a living and with passion, so that I impact on someone who will take positively from my skills. I think teaching overseas next year is a good start but locally I want to do some volunteering or do more international student stuff at uni. Eventually I want to be a counsellor to tertiary or high school students. Currently I'm glad I can interpret with ease the emotional dilemmas that plague my close friends, providing closure or recommendations for their next action, but at the same time I also want many people to fuck right off and stop relying on me to be the one that 'has it all together'. I'm not invincible and I doubt I will be until one day when I'm living in Melbourne or Osaka or Montréal and have an amazing wife whose language I no doubt had to learn fluently before being able to make love to her properly.
I'm glad I'm still able to see the good in the world and have enough faith in people to want to be proactive. If only everyone could just give up their pointless, bloodthirsty religious dogma and give fate and destiny the finger, finally understanding that if you're to make something out of your life you'll only waste it looking for a sign from some deity.
So anyway, at least I have focused hatred, not just the 'Adam Myers' style hatred where you just hate, because 'Cunts fuck me off.'
In the last fifteen minutes of writing this I had originally planned to be making peanut butter and jam on toast so now I'd better make up for that lost time and do just that.
