"tactile orange tic-tac"
i have a tangerine scarf fourteen feet long.
i wish that christmas lights had taste, pepperminty crushing glass between my teeth,
sheer segmented sicknesses we are
to swallow down the holidays, like a rainbow milkshake, that flames and warms
we spit mints into each other's mouths with orangeade tongues,
but it's not like a soda shop, not a checkered counter, just a mess, needles, pine, snow,
the scarf, the work of my hands, only is ridiculous.
yet my teeth grind down on nothing, my tongue, clings to cheeksides in a vain search, the hollow of my throat is empty. and no desperate swallowing with eyes closed will put a fuzzy lump there.

beth and i wrote that at the red eye tonight. it's really good, i think. we wrote it by each writing a line, and then folding it over so the other couldn't see it, and then we just kept going to the bottom of the page. it's amazing that it turned out so coherent. i love it.
