But with a little wink I'll be there

So, this weekend was the New York Comic-Con. I had the chance to, as some guy said, "walk among the unbathed" and study some nerds in their natural habitat. Here is what I learned:

There are a lot of nerds in the NY-Metro area--and most of them wake up early.
I don't know exactly how many people went, but Newsday estimates that about 10,000 people attended. (Just for comparison, the main arena of Madison Square Garden has 20,000 seats.) We got to the Javits center about an hour before the place opened on Saturday, and most of these nerds were already on line in front of us. Every special event was sold out before we got to the front of the line, so no Kevin Smith or Art School Confidential for us. But we were still lucky for getting out onto the main floor before the fire marshal shut the place down and only let people in after others left.

The more nerds are obsessed with sci-fi-fantasy, the less happy it makes them.
At least that's what some grad student told me on line (she was doing a study more scientific than my own).

They draw interesting crowds.
Walking among the masses, I saw: a smurf, lots of anime people I couldn't identify including a cute purple bunny thing, two different ugly dolls, storm troopers, Venom, Boba Fett, Sailor Saturn, Pac Man, and the dude from My Chemical Romance (for real). Deena Pilgrim, as expected, didn't show. (Niether did Philip K. Dick, with his excuse being that he's been dead for several years.)

Their priorities are way out of line.
I can't believe that Bendis ditched the panel I went to because he had some "big announcement" to do over at the Marvel panel. Betrayer! I would hate him and bitterly point out that Brian K. Vaughn is a cuter bald dude anyway, but when I went to the Ultimate Marvel panel this morning he seemed pretty nice.

They train them young.
At the Milla Jovovich Q&A, a tiny kid went up the mic and said "Violet, what was it like to kill all those soldiers?" She gave him a hug, which is probably the most action that any of those nerds saw that day.

They have a lot of disposable income.
I spent so much money, and I was still tempted to buy a Maxx shirt. But I don't mind that I'm poor now, because I have something that makes my life complete:
