Birthday Rockin' Week 3/5: THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN

Man, that was nearly perfect.

The ice of Boston is muddy,
And reflects no light
In day or night,
and I trip on it every time.
Venue: The Paradise, the only venue in Boston I've been to already (to see OK Go and "The Dawnas"). It looked cool on the inside, and everyone says it's much nicer now that it's been renovated. But it was sort of an odd shape, being much wider than long with lots of space on the sides of the stage. People don't want to be so far off to the side, so everyone squishes in the middle, so it's kind of hard to be front and center.

Seats/Position in Crowd/Up-In-Itness: Due to the strange width/length ratio, in the beginning we were in the center, but pretty far in the back. But people kept leaving to go get drinks and not trying to return, and Chris pulled me up front, so by the end I was pretty far up! In any case, everyone in the crowd was really into it, so every spot was Up In It.

OPQ (Old Person Quotient): The lowest so far. Two opening bands, they didn't come on until twenty to 11, rocking out until my knees hurt, I turned a round number age during the show, etc. etc.

Opening Act: Certainly Sir was up first, and I didn't pay one iota of attention to them. Sorry, guys. The Forms were up next, and I thought they were mostly enjoyable--they were on the Discovery/Ra Ra Riot end of the musical spectrum.

Setlist: Jesse posted the setlist, as is his wont. Isn't that an amazing setlist? Oh God, so great.

High Point: It's hard. The whole thing was a high point, because OMG the Dismemberment Plan is doing shows again. But I really did like the sing-along songs the best--there were massive crowd sings to "You Are Invited" and "What Do You Want Me To Say"--and it was the best when Travis didn't sing the end of "Gyroscope" and everyone in the crowd finished it for him.

Low Point: The six-hour bus ride it took to get to Boston. It's best if we don't speak about it. There were no low points at the show.

Exuberance: Oh so exuberant! The crowd was great, jumping around and getting all excited without too much unnecessary roughness (at least where I was), and the band, if anything, was even more excited. You couldn't have asked for more energy.

When the show was over, I had the same feeling I had after I saw Alice in Wonderland, which could best be described as an "I want to see this again immediately." Thankfully, we're going again tonight. One show wouldn't have been enough. Also, it's good to know that you can turn officially old, in the F. Scott Fitzgerald sense of the word, and still get these child-like feelings.
