Wave of Mutilation

The level of busyness in my life looks like a sine wave. Last weekend was full. There were people, out-of-town visitors, thunderstorms, the Hold Steady, the whole works. Work last week was middle-of-the-road: I had a manageable number of things I had to accomplish, but it was a shorter week in which to get things done. This weekend was blissfully free. I actually got to do some of the things I've been saying, "I'll get to it when I get a free moment." This includes six loads of laundry (probably the most I've done in my entire life) and a top-to-bottom cleaning of the apartment, which was looking rather mangy (apologies to the out-of-town guests who had to stay in the rattiness).

Not to say that this weekend was all chores. (Although I'm really happy that the chores are done. Does that make me an old person? I don't care, I'm happy!) Even though it was just the two of us, Jesse and I managed to eke out a pretty patriotic Fourth of July. In the humidity, we ventured into the Green-Wood Cemetery, where we stood on the highest point in Brooklyn and gazed out toward Manhattan to the Statue of Liberty. It was actually pretty cool. We also saw a couple war memorials (see, patriotic) along with the graves of Louis Comfort Tiffany (meh), Horace Greeley (better), and, Jesse's favorite, Boss Tweed (awesome). After the cemetery, since we don't have a place to barbecue ourselves, we got the best grilled food in America: Shake Shack. There were heavy raindrops while we were waiting on line, but it never officially rained. This country is good to me sometimes. After dinner we came back to Greenpoint and walked to the end of our street to watch fireworks. We're well situated-we can see the fireworks go off from the 14th-, 23rd-, and 34th-Street barges. It's like watching them in stereo, only there's three identical sets of fireworks.

Obviously, since this weekend was peaceful and fun, this means that next week the sine wave will be on the upswing again. I've dubbed next week The Week of Doing Things. This includes getting a haircut (halleluljah-I've had to stop myself from taking my office scissors into the bathroom and just doing it myself), using up that spa gift certificate I've had since Christmas, and going to a movie screening. The week after, the wave crests with what I've taken to calling The Week of Awesome. All in a row, there's another possible movie screening, Stay Positive comes out for real, the Best of Westchester party will hook me up with free stuff, I'll get to see The Dark Knight at midnight, then I leave for Ethan and Andrew's wedding! I'm so excited it's hard for me to even think about it, since I still have one week of work to get through before it starts.
