In the Navy (obvious joke here)

So I've been out of boot camp for 12 days and I'm settling into A-school life. I'll be here for at least four months, because I've been put on hold for three weeks, and expect to be on hold again at some point.

I kept a journal for six weeks about boot camp life. Alex read it, saying he wished there was more "day to day" stuff but there wasn't much to talk about.

All in all it was a lot easier than anticipated. Still, it was about what I expected, but much more relaxed than I ever imagined. At the same time, life was restrictive; we had to ask for everything, except when our RDCs (Recruit Division Commanders) yelled at us to do things our damn selves.

I befriended a few people, but most of us have gone our separate ways for school. We are all in "student" status.

I had two bunkmates during boot camp; My first was Shelby Milsap, or just "Milsap" (Geeze, it feels weird calling her by her first name).

Whether or not she's a lesbian is still up for debate, but she had something hot and heavy with Miller, or maybe they were just good friends, I'm still unsure.

I really liked Milsap, but I think she got tired of me near the end. I somewhat latched onto her and my second bunkmate, Rodriguez.

Milsap is from Idaho, and is one of the most mild-mannered people I've ever met. She speaks in a monotone, and has an off-kilter sense of humor that I didn't always follow. She and Silva got on very well, constantly making music references, sliding across the floor in their socks and playing soft ball with rolled socks.

The first night we really talked, we mostly talked about drugs with Solomon, who slept one rack over. Meth seemed to be a reoccurring topic.

Tessa Solomon is a recovering addict, and I suspect her journey isn't over. When she came into boot camp she was still detoxing, though I never noticed until much later. She claims Chief (Newman) knew about the "coming down" early on, and felt that Chief was waiting for her to screw up for the following eight weeks. I agree Chief was hard on her for usually what seemed for no reason.

Solomon had a lot of problems with her knees after the first four weeks. She used to be a runner, and thought the years of drugs had made her knees even worse. Pain pills didn't work on her because one of her drugs of choice was pain killers. She passed her PFA (Physical Fitness Assessment) regardless. I was extremely glad because she really did try hard.

Later, Solomon seemed very interested in me once she found out I was bisexual... even more so when I got my Mohawk cut off and looked more butch than ever. Had we been outside boot camp I'm not sure we would have kept things platonic. Given all the conspicuous lesbian love floating among the racks I feel I made the right decision.

Silva, who has a girlfriend she wants to marry, was bad at keeping things platonic. She liked to touch people - it was her way of comforting - and was caught with notes in her textbook that were entirely not authorized.

I think Silva was my favorite person at which to look. She's about my height, stocky and muscular with wild, curly black hair and a very handsome face. She has a tattoo of Rafiki's drawing of Simba on her left arm, and is left-handed.

(More to come; Rodriguez, Davis (And Davis), Richardson, Kolchinsky, Fernandez)
