First order of business:
Dear everyone who bid on me, or who I happened to bid on, for
helpbrazil2011,
qldfloodauction, and/or
help_japan: I am sorry I am the worst at fandom auctions. My spring has been much busier than I expected, and I've fallen behind on several important things. (Job applications, for instance. Also, my social life is down to four people, only one of whom lives with a 200-mile radius of me.) All my classes are going well, surprisingly; I've just been neglecting fandom things to make up for them, not the other way around. ;__;
I have not forgotten about you, though! I am 90% done with a Ten II/Rose fanmix for
jamesie_boy, but I still have someone finishing a beta for that, and I need to finish the cover. Then I have two half-completed fics in the work for
misura and
daystarsearcher, plus a few vague plot-puppies for
livii and
admiralmizaki. I still need to watch more Classic Who, I feel, to be able to do justice to half those fics, and have to catch up on 30 Rock for another...
I promise you, though, that your noble bidding shall not be in vain, and I will have something finished and posted for all of you by the end of May. (I know, I know, that's almost six months late, I'm sorry.) Thanks again for helping the lovely people of Brazil/Japan/Queensland!
Second, there is a part of me that, despite all those auction commitments, desperately wants to get a few Doctor Who fics done and posted before Series 6 comes along and there is new, shiny canon. (If I don't put up Part of Your World until the 23rd, it will be Jossed to all hell, and I will be sad...)
Also I somehow decided I could do Script Frenzy this month? Lies, all lies. I will most likely be abandoning that by the weekend. Maybe I could cut my losses and go for 50 pages in half a month? Anyway, my life has essentially become a less exciting version of
this oglaf comic (Warning: NSFW link).
Third: I started volunteer working at an abortion clinic last weekend! It was a fascinating experience, and I met a couple very nice and interesting people. We helped keep each other warm, because it was like 40 degrees and we spent most all of it standing outside. It was also pretty boring. That is a good thing, when one is an abortion clinic escort. I will see how that ends up working out for me, I suppose.
Fourthly: I got a meme from
makokitten the other day. It goes like this:
1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and link) 5 songs you love that begin with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.
She gave me L. And I decided to only take songs that started with L proper, without articles (so not "A Little Priest" or "The Last Song"), because it made choosing five songs easier. All links go to YouTube because MediaFire was being annoying this afternoon.
1.
Let's Hear it for the Boy - Deniece Williams (Footloose)
First heard this song on a radio show, which played a snippet whenever a male politician/celebrity did something particularly exciting or honorable. Then I saw Footloose and had it stuck in my head for a week afterward; it's so poppy and cute. Also, this is one of my girlfriend's favorite musical-theater songs.
2.
Life Support - Ensemble (Rent)
I have seen Rent more times than I can remember, in four versions - both movies, and a couple of high school/college productions - and this song never fails to affect me. (Also, it beat out "La Vie Boheme" because I did not want these songs to be 40% Jonathan Larson.) It's short, and slow, but really profound. And it's a message that everyone can use: There's only us, there's only this; forget regret, or life is yours to miss...
3.
Little Things - Sesame Street
Speaking of slow and simple and really profound... I remember loving this song from a very young age. It's really lovely, and talks about all the subtle things people don't notice or disregard. 'Tis some very good music.
4.
Lovebug - Jonas Brothers
So, between the last two songs, I feel the need to re-affirm that I am an actual adult, who can vote and drive and smoke and everything (theoretically). Nevertheless, I am the sort of adult who has a favorite Jonas Brothers song (this one, and
Much Better), and will defend it as a decent piece of music, if not anything earth-shattering. Captures the rushing, hopeful, kinda exhilarating feeling of a new love just right, I think. Also, this music video is gorgeous.
5.
Love Song - Sara Bareilles
This was one of the first songs that came to mind for this meme, because I associate Ms. Bareilles's music with Chel, and I also love her to pieces. I have two different versions of this song, the single and the album one, and I can never keep the two of them straight.
~
Last but not least, something which I cannot say enough (and have not said on lj yet): Happy anniversary,
skypaws!
