“I stained the sheets. Sorry,” Luke Snyder said as he touched the wet spot on the bed.

“That’s okay,” replied Reid Oliver, tightening his arms around Luke and pressing the front of his body closer to Luke’s back. “I’ll wash them.”

“You don’t wash,” Luke murmured.

“I do now. Since I don’t have you around anymore, there’s lots of stuff I’ve learned to do on my own,” Reid said, his mouth against Luke’s hair.

Luke looked down at Reid’s arm wrapped around his waist as he thought about what Reid had said.

“Luke?”

“I have to go,” Luke said, looking over his shoulder at Reid before sitting up.

Reid sat up too and held onto one of Luke’s arms. “Wait, can’t we just stay like this for a while longer?”

Luke moved away from Reid’s touch and scooted to the end of the bed. “Reid, we talked about this.”

Reid narrowed his eyes at Luke. “Right,” he said dryly, “like I could forget-FWF.”

Luke looked at him as he put on his pants. “Huh?”

“Fuck without feelings. Isn’t that what you called it?”

Luke paused. “Reid.”

Reid looked down at the wet spot on the bed, his fingers touching the evidence left of their intense sexual escapade only minutes before. “You can go, Luke.”

Luke put on his shirt and stared at Reid while he buttoned it. “Do you want to meet tomorrow?”

Reid shrugged. “I’ll let you know.” He lay on his back and avoided looking at Luke. “I’m working all day.”

“Okay.” Luke picked up his jacket and tie and looked at Reid one final time. “Bye, Reid.”

“Bye, Luke,” Reid said. He shut his eyes when Luke shut the door.

Earlier . . .

It all started with a stupid, stupid argument that escalated into a silly spat that led to a serious fight and then to a series of shouting matches and hurtful accusations.

Four years, two months, and three weeks after officially becoming a couple, Luke and Reid broke up.

And exactly one month after that, Luke and Reid got back together . . . sort of.

Since ending their relationship, they saw each other a lot. Oakdale was a small town, and there was no way to avoid running into each other, especially when both still worked at the hospital-Reid as Chief of Staff and Luke as a board member-and frequented the same places: Java, Al’s, the Lakeview restaurant, Chris and Katie’s house (where, sadly, the sneaky duo of Dr. and Mrs. Hughes had no luck in reuniting the two men).

But they hardly looked at each other, save for a muttered greeting or slow head nod.

They each proudly maintained this limited communication, neither one wanting to be the first to break down and beg the other to talk.

Until the day of the monthly board meeting, when it all began.

It had been the first meeting they attended as a non-couple. Reid sat down at the head of the table as he always did as Chief of Staff, but this time, Luke sat as far away from him as possible. Luke didn’t even look at him as Reid talked about the usual administrative issues.

It was only until after Luke finished sharing his proposal for an increase in staffing that, prompted by Reid and his curt statement-“I disagree with you, Mr. Snyder”-he finally looked directly at Reid.

“Which part?” asked Luke defensively.

“All of it,” Reid replied.

“You don’t like my idea?”

“I don’t agree with it. I don’t think Memorial needs more employees. The staff we have is just fine.”

“They’re overworked,” argued Luke.

“So we’ll shorten some shifts and switch others around so no one feels overwhelmed,” Reid said.

“Why not just hire more people to alleviate everyone’s workload?” asked Luke.

“Why not just let the current staff work overtime and give them raises?” challenged Reid. “With the budget we have, that’ll be a whole lot cheaper. Besides, I haven’t heard my staff complain.”

“Maybe that’s because they’re scared to tell you how they really feel,” Luke said, his voice rising as he leaned forward on the table.

“Or maybe they don’t like making something out of nothing,” Reid retorted, just as loudly.

Both men glared at each other while the board members stared at them. The only woman of the group cleared her throat. “I think it’s time to adjourn this meeting. We can discuss this issue further in the next one. Does everyone agree?”

The rest of the people quickly murmured in agreement. Everyone around Luke and Reid stood and exited the conference room. Reid finally looked away from Luke and walked out. Luke followed.

Reid was standing in front of the urinal when the door swung open and Luke stepped in. His stomps echoed in the room as he walked toward Reid. Luke stopped beside him with his hands on his hips. “Why’d you do that?”

Reid glanced down at himself. “Do you mind?”

“How dare you undermine me?” demanded Luke as he stared at Reid.

Reid finished and zipped up his pants. “I merely disagreed with you. There’s a difference. Look it up.” He pushed past Luke, brushing his shoulder lightly against Luke’s, and walked to the sink, one of three in the small restroom.

“You never disagree with me about hospital business,” Luke said, walking up behind Reid.

“There’s a first time for everything, buddy. Get used to it.”

“You did it just to rile me up and out of spite. You’re getting back at me because you’re still upset that I-”

Reid looked at Luke. “That you what?” He shook his hands over the sink to dry them and then turned to face Luke. “That you what, Luke?”

“That I left you.”

Neither man said or did anything but stare at each other.

Finally, Reid smirked. “I haven’t even thought about that.”

“It’s been a month,” Luke said.

Reid shrugged. “I don’t have time to think about it. I’m always busy. Isn’t that what you accused me of the last time we talked?” He folded his arms across his chest. “Besides, you’re just mad because I’m not fawning all over your little idea.”

Luke glared at him. “You’re a jerk.”

This time, Reid laughed. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

Luke walked closer to him, leaving no space between them. “And an asshole.”

“It takes one to know one.”

Luke, in a move that completely shocked him, grabbed the back of Reid’s head and pulled him close, pushing their lips together in a hard kiss. Reid grunted in surprise but kissed back, holding the sides of Luke’s face as he deepened their kiss.

After a few more seconds, Reid pulled back slightly. “Lock the door,” he said hoarsely.

“What?”

Reid released Luke and walked to the door, bolting it shut before returning to Luke.

“What-what are we doing?”

“You know what you’re doing; so do I,” Reid replied.

Luke pushed himself into Reid again as they resumed kissing. Reid broke the kiss and turned Luke around. Both men stared at each other in the mirror as Reid pushed Luke against the sink and put his hands on Luke’s belt. Reid, still staring at Luke, cupped Luke’s erection and began to slowly move his palm over it. Luke, staring back at Reid, groaned and covered Reid’s hand with his. Reid then moved his hand to unbuckle and unzip Luke’s pants. He bent Luke forward so that Luke gripped the sides of the sink.

Luke was breathing hard as he looked at Reid over his shoulder. “Reid, I don’t have anything.”

Reid pulled down his own pants and pushed Luke’s legs apart. “Have you been with anyone?”

“No. Have you?”

“Of course not,” Reid replied, putting his palm in front of Luke’s mouth. “Spit.”

Luke spat. Reid did the same into his hand and slowly rubbed their spit down and around Luke’s opening. Luke jerked forward as Reid’s cock, wet and very hard, brushed against his ass before entering him.

“Are you okay?” Reid quickly asked, his right hand gently rubbing Luke’s back.

Luke nodded and pushed back on Reid’s cock, the signal for Reid to begin moving. Reid thrust once and paused for a reaction from Luke. Luke simply nodded again, so Reid pushed into Luke, his thrusts quickening as Luke moaned and writhed underneath him.

Luke’s hands held on to the sink as Reid slammed faster inside him. As he saw himself in the mirror-mouth hanging open, eyes half-closed, cock bouncing between his stomach and the counter-Luke caught Reid’s eye. Reid grinned as he thrust and came inside Luke.

Reid immediately spun Luke around and pushed him against the sink once more and began to stroke Luke’s cock. Luke buried his face in Reid’s neck as he gasped.

“Come, Luke, come,” Reid urged.

Luke muffled his cry and spilled all over Reid’s hand. They both leaned against each other as their harsh breathing returned to normal. Luke suddenly stepped back and looked at his half-naked body, sweat and semen on his legs. Reid pulled his pants up, grabbed a paper towel and wet it, handing it to Luke.

But Luke ignored it and instead picked up his pants and ran into a stall. Reid washed his hands and looked up when Luke stepped out of the stall and stared at him in the mirror.

“Luke,” Reid began.

Luke shook his head. “This was a mistake,” he said before rushing out of the restroom.

But Luke didn’t consider it a mistake two hours later as he sat in his office, trying hard to concentrate on grant proposals when all he could think about was the familiar smell of Reid when he had been in him, around him and all over him. Or the way his long, nimble fingers had touched him. Or the feel of his thin but strong lips as they had pushed onto his own.

Luke had wanted it to happen, had been hoping for something like that for thirty days, so he didn’t think it’d been a mistake.

But then he remembered the fights, the problems and the way everything between them had become a mess, and he knew-and would have to make sure-that nothing like the restroom escapade could ever happen again. He resolved to talk to Reid about it.

Reid felt it had not been a mistake. He’d been waiting a month for something like that to happen. What had been a mistake, Reid thought, was the way they had let things between them reach a breaking point. In the four years they’d been together, they hadn’t spent more than a day apart after a fight. It had always been impossible to stay away from one another, even way before they were together.

And even though Luke said what he’d said afterwards, Reid didn’t believe him. He knew that Luke still felt something for him, especially after the way he’d kissed Reid and responded to his every touch.

But Reid had already made his move and would now wait for Luke to make his.

It turned out that Reid didn’t have to wait long. When he opened the door to the house later that night, Luke burst inside without a word.

“Well, hello, to you,” Reid said, locking the door and looking at Luke.

Luke stood with his arms crossed. “That can’t ever happen again.”

“Yeah, you made that really clear before you ran out of the little boy’s room,” Reid said.

“I didn’t run,” Luke protested.

“Please, you couldn’t get out of the room fast enough,” Reid said with a laugh.

“That’s because you-and-and I and . . .” Luke trailed off as his face turned red.

Reid, attracted to a blushing Luke like a moth to a flame, walked closer to him. “You can’t stop thinking about it, can you?”

Luke swallowed as his cheeks burned brighter. He stared at Reid.

“That ‘cause you liked it,” Reid said.

“It’s been a long time,” Luke whispered. He then firmly shook his head. “But you and I-we don’t do that anymore. We’re-we’re not together.”

Reid touched Luke’s arm. “I’m right here.”

And for the second time that day, Luke surprised them both as he flung his arms around Reid’s neck and kissed him.

Reid kissed back before taking Luke’s hands in his and leading him into the bedroom.

Reid unbuttoned his shirt as he looked at Luke, his breath quickening. “Take off your clothes.”

Luke, in a bit of a daze, stared at Reid before he finally began undressing.

Once they were both completely naked, Reid pushed Luke onto the bed and fell on top of him, attacking his mouth, his throat, his soft, soft neck. Luke groaned and held onto Reid’s head.

Luke wanted to stop it; he knew they shouldn’t be doing this, but then Reid looked into Luke’s eyes and Luke only saw Reid. Kissing him, touching him, fucking him-that was all that mattered. Luke pushed Reid onto his back and sat up on top of Reid.

“Where’s the stuff?”

Reid pointed to the bedside table. “It’s still in there.”

Luke reached over and grabbed the small bottle. He squirted some lubricant onto his hand and then tossed the bottle to the floor. He opened Reid’s legs wide and kneeled between them, coating his cock with lube and rubbing the rest on Reid. He looked at Reid questioningly. When Reid nodded, Luke lifted Reid’s bent legs up to give him better access to his ass and then guided his cock inside Reid.

Reid’s groaned and threw his head back on the pillow.

“You-you okay?” Luke asked, his voice low and throaty.

Reid nodded again and urged Luke on. “Do it. Move, Luke!”

Luke thrust into Reid, increasing the speed as Reid squirmed and begged for more.

“Luke, Luke, Luke,” Reid chanted over and over as he stroked his cock while Luke pushed into him.

When Luke suddenly paused and stopped moving, Reid gently touched Luke’s hand. Reid wanted this-no, he needed this-but he wanted Luke to want it to. He wanted them both to feel the connection that still existed between them. “Luke?”

Luke pulled out of Reid and moved down on the bed. Reid immediately sat up to stop Luke from leaving when he felt Luke’s warm mouth on his cock. Reid fell back and shut his eyes. “Luke.”

Luke sucked and licked and sucked some more until Reid came, gripping the sheets and gasping for air. He’d barely opened his eyes when he felt Luke inside him again.

Luke thrust a few more times before coming inside Reid. Still kneeling, he fell forward, his sweaty head resting on Reid’s stomach.

Reid reached out and caressed Luke’s hair-one of his favorites activities ever. “Luke,” he whispered.

But Luke said nothing as he pulled out of Reid and stood up. “We shouldn’t have done this.”

Reid sat up. “Why not?”

Luke zipped up his pants. “You know why. We’re not back together.”

“So why’d you kiss me?”

“We kissed each other.”

“You kissed me first.”

“You fucked me.”

Reid nodded towards the bed. “And what did you just do to me?”

Luke buttoned his shirt and then stared at Reid. “What does this mean?”

“What do we want it to mean?” Reid asked, standing and putting on his pants. He looked at Luke. “Do you want to give us another try?”

Luke rubbed his face. “Reid, we talked about this. There’s so much and-and . . .”

“And what, Luke?”

“And are you ready to admit that you were wrong?” Luke asked.

“I wasn’t; I’m not.”

Luke forced a laugh. “Then no, I can’t see how we can work things out.”

“What about you? Why don’t you admit that you overreacted?”

“Because I didn’t! You’re the one who always accuses me of that.”

“Because you always do it!”

Luke shook his head. “Yeah, this was definitely a mistake.”

Reid laughed. “Are you sure you want to call it that-something you did twice in one day that you clearly enjoyed?”

Luke hesitated before answering. “Okay, fine, I’ll admit that I don’t regret what we did.”

“Good to know.”

Luke scratched his head and looked at the floor. “I missed this. I missed you.”

Reid walked to him but Luke looked up and held out a hand to stop him.

“This doesn’t change anything, Reid.”

“All right, then, let’s leave it at that,” Reid muttered. “And maybe we shouldn’t talk to each other anymore or be in the same room together.”

Luke wrinkled his face. “What? Why?”

“Because then something will happen again, Luke, and you obviously don’t want that,” Reid spat out, his hands on his hips.

Luke stared at Reid.

“What?”

“Did you want this to happen?” asked Luke softly.

“Yeah. I missed it, too.”

Luke pursed his lips thoughtfully. “What if, um, what if we keep doing this, then?”

“What?”

“What if we, um, can keep meeting like this to, you know, have sex even if we’re not back together?” Luke asked, not looking directly at Reid.

“Just sex? Like fuck buddies?” Reid asked before correcting himself. “Or fuck exes?”

Luke smiled. “Yeah, something like that.” He nervously ran a hand through his hair. “I mean, we both wanted it so maybe we can continue it, no strings attached.”

“Luke Snyder, fucking without feelings: has the boy gone mad?” Reid said, grinning at Luke.

“Reid.”

“Why, Luke?”

Luke shrugged. “It just seems like you still want to be with me but not really and I want to be with you but not really.”

Reid stared at Luke.

“And that way when it happens, as it did today, neither of us gets upset or feels guilty or expects anything more. We simply let it happen and then we move on. What do you say?”

It wasn’t what Reid wanted. He wanted Luke, but he wanted all of Luke. However, if Luke was willing to give even a little bit of himself to Reid, then Reid would take it.

Luke waited for Reid to answer. He wanted Reid to agree even though Luke himself was unsure that he liked the deal they were making. But since neither of them seemed to want to solve the problems between them, this, to Luke, was the next best thing to being together.

“Well?”

Reid nodded. “Okay.”

“Can I call you tomorrow?”

“Sure,” Reid replied.

Luke walked to the door and glanced back at his ex. “Bye, Reid.”

“Bye, Luke.”
