SPN ficlet: Under the Hood

Summary: Dean passes the torch.
Notes: Not sure about the actual timeline in the show, but I like the fact that Fresh Blood aired almost exactly 6 months after AHBL2.
The air is still, expectant, when Dean calls him over to the open hood of the Impala, engine ticking quietly as it cools. He listens, bemused, as his brother begins describing engine parts, then stares when Dean holds out the socket wrench.
When his fingers close over the cool metal, it feels almost like betrayal.
He leans forward, into the shadow of the car’s open hood, so that Dean will not see the despairing glitter in his eyes. Because his brother hasn’t just given him a tool and told him to get to work on a rattling engine. Dean has passed the torch, entrusted the care of his precious Impala to him. And by accepting, Sam has just admitted to himself that he might not be able to save Dean. His brother has six months to live, six months before Hell claims him, and he still has no better idea of how to get Dean out of his deal.
Dean is sitting on the cooler box nearby. “Put your back into it, Sam,” he says, and doesn’t meet his eyes.
After Dad died, Dean lost himself in putting the Impala back together. Maybe Dean hopes that when his time comes, Sam will do the same.
