Just watched
Bring It On, which has one of the least interesting dvd commentaries I've ever heard. At the end, though, the director goes into a discussion of end credits, which I'm documenting here for my own
These are what, in the movie business, are called "closing titles" or "end credits." They are basically words in white against black. We went to a lot of trouble to sort of make these really different. I really wanted them to stand out from the titles of other movies.
I wanted to make sure that everything was spelled correctly, that the order of the names fulfilled all the contractual requirements, and that there was a constant sort of upward movement of the titles. I think we really were able to achieve that on a limited budget. I'm really pleased with how these credits came out.
I like the fact also that the credits give you a good idea of who was involved in the making of the movie. I felt it was important that you see the name and then you see the job that each person was doing because a lot of time there's confusion.
On a lot of movies they just sort of throw names up there, and I really feel like if someone comes away from Bring It On, the one thing I really want them then to remember is the titles at the end here. Not the blooper stuff, but just these black and white titles. I think they really have a lot of personality. I wanted to pick a font that really was indicative of the world of cheerleading.
I didn't want too many serifs, and I really felt strongly that names should be in all upper case letters. It was hard to achieve it, but once again, I'm really pleased that we were able to do it. Both Beacon and Universal were very supportive in the design here, of the titles.
A lot of titles, you know, there's much discussion about do they start at the top of the frame and go down, or do they start at the bottom and go up, and I felt that it was important for them to go up, because I really wanted people to leave the movie with sort of an up feeling.
Here are the song listings....
He said he's directed some
Upright Citizens' Brigade shows. I believe him.
