Paths
Pairing: Remus/Ron
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 318
Scenario: At night, Ron believes he can see Harry again (yes, thus meaning, Harry is dead), and Remus believes him.
"I saw him." Ron repeats, absolute certainty in his voice.
"Harry's dead, Ron," I reply, unable to stop myself. His eyes fill with tears, but his voice is steady.
"I know that, I'm not mental! I'm telling you - I saw Harry over there, and he wants us to go that way."
"Ron, I'm not... Look, it's dark and we've both had a really difficult day." He snorts at that. Looking at our bloodstained clothing, I can hardly blame him. 'Difficult' is probably the understatement of the year.
"Prof.. I mean Mr Lupin, I know it's hard to believe, but I saw Harry and he wants us to go over there. I think he wants us to be safe - he was smiling." A tear slides down his cheek, and his voice is starting to shake.
"Remus." I say quietly. "Just Remus." I frown, looking from him to the gap in the trees where he said he saw Harry. A fox barks, and I am suddenly vividly reminded of the night that Pettigrew escaped.
"The dead don't come back," I say quietly. Ron sniffles slightly, and glares at me.
"Look, I know," he says, scrubbing at his eyes. "We both saw him die, we both know that there's no doubt he's dead and can't come back, OK? That doesn't explain why I saw him over there." He points again, and suddenly I think I see a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. I turn face-on and stare in the direction Ron is pointing, but I can’t see anything.
"I believe you," I tell him quietly. He turns and starts walking in the direction Harry indicated. I move quickly to catch up, and take his hand. He looks at me, slightly startled. I wonder whether I should let go, but then his hand grips mine and he squeezes. We walk on in the direction Harry showed us.
