No, just kidding. But the boy and I did just spend a few minutes discussing my character's name. He asked questions about her to help me paint more of a picture. She's British, lives in a small town outside London (that part was inspired by Kate Winslet's character in The Holiday), loves to bake, often spends weekends at friends' houses in London where she goes to music shows and generally indulges in her urban side. Otherwise, she loves to go walking in the countryside, be domestic in her adorable little cottage, drink lots of tea, and visit the little shops and grocers in her town. She's refined without realizing it, proper and polite yet creative, free-willed, and a bit flighty. Her family is old-money, somewhat wealthy English stock, but with enough generations of ne'er do wells and children wandering off the beaten track to lend an air of gypsy caravan meets upper crust with a dash of charming impropriety. Her mother is an avant garde clothing designer, her father a writer. She is a painter, but works as a part-time illustrator to fill in the not-insignificant gaps.
Suffice to say she's British, intelligent, cute, loves music, loves French food, fall and winter, loves both the city and the countryside with equal fervor, and is very much devoted to lifes' indulgences: food, travel, sweets, and a good massage by candlelight ;)
So...call her Evie.
I'm still rolling it around my brain, my tongue, seeing how it works for me. I've always liked the name, and it's very British as well as being cute and casual without being too anything. I like it. And I can thank
guiduck for the suggestion!
