If historical precedence is anything to go by, then it's always safe to bet against the Apocolypse cum Rapture.
I know it's fashionably easy to ridicule this whole thing, and it should be; and we should be. It's the only defense. Reason will fail you every time you try to run against that mindset. Every time. Reason doesn't enter into it.
Every belief system works because it is just that: a system. It has end results, it has goals. It has sign posts that one can navigate by, so those goals can be reached. This can be belief in scientific principles, or even religious beliefs.
I've read recently on the 'net, that a few are finding it hard to ridicule this whole Rapture business. Because there are real people with real lives, that really believe in this stuff. I can't. If I had a dangerous mindset, I would hope that someone would try to remove me from it. Religion does this time and time again when I assert my atheism; something they see as a dangerous mindset. The shoe, invariably, will fit on the other foot. We live life in a balance with beliefs not our own.
