Three Vampire Diaries tutes for
kimigahiro. Some of the caps for this show are so hella dark. (All of these icons are over
here.)
#one. I eternally begin with curves! I realise that there are other ways to lighten images. I just really really love the ease and control you have with curves. And in this particular example, how you can wash/balance some colours in there too.
curves:
rgb; 111, 151
red; 44, 47
green; 99, 103
blue; 125, 152
#two. A bit washed out, too blue, so:
color balance:
shadows; -13, +2, +16
midtones; 0, -2, -15
highlights; +37, +23, +11
#three. Some nice bright colours please, (this is the most I've ever done in one selective color layer).
selective color:
reds: -29, +33, +42, +16
yellows: +43, -11, +55, -41
greens: +48, +44, +37, -76
cyans: +53, +30, +44, -53
blues: +23, +75, -14, -58
blacks: +15, +11, +42, 0
#four. Her face has red 'bleeding' in it. I don't like it.
fill layer: #2c7590 Soft Light, 30% opacity.
#five. It's all fairly dark. This is an experimental colouring technique.
select all, copy merged. paste. I used a paintbrush on #d6d3be at 80% opacity over the layer, then set the whole layer to soft light 30% opacity. this means that the light goes to appropriate areas.
#six. Lighten it all up.
curves:
rgb; 153, 164
#seven. And now for some blue that I actually want!
channel mixer:
red; +100, 0, -10
Done! Comment for the .psd.

#one. Ewww, far too dark.
curves:
rgb; 86, 129
#two. And grey. She looks like a zombie, not a vampire!
selective color:
reds; -43, +55, +100, 0
yellows; -21, +74, +100, 0
greens; -65, +59, 0, 0
magentas; -55, +100, +100, 0
#three. Still too dark.
curves:
rgb; 118, 153
#four. I want some more red in her hair, make her a strawberry blonde.
selective color:
reds; -41, +100, 0, 0
yellows; -55, +100, +100, 0
BUT I don't want her face to be all inflamed. So I used an eraser and erased under her bangs. This tends to leave half #000000 (under her fringe) and #ffffff above her fringe.
#five. Texture time!
by
99mockingbirds (go check out her site, it's great!)
(i've meddled with it so that it sits over her hair, not over her cheek per se, so it looks like
) multiply 100%.
#six. Oh grey, how you darken images.
curves:
rgb; 130, 166
#seven. I do this with a lot of my icons. Hide the texture layer. Select all, copy merge. Show the texture layer again. New layer at the top, paste. Set at soft light. That means you have this lovely matching colouring on your contrast layer.
And we're done. Comment for the .psd.

Okay, so I have cut miss Bennet out of the original image. All similar colours, yes?
#one.
curves:
rgb; 65, 123
#two. Add some colour to her skin:
selective color:
reds; -12, +37, +100, 0
yellows; +4, +18, -13, 9
magentas; -47, +100, +100
#three. Texture time!
by
innocent_Lexys (also great stuff!) multiply 100%.
I cut her head out because I didn't want flowers on her face.
#four. Texture darkens the image, so:
curves:
rgb; 97, 13.
Her face is too bright. I used a little fuzzy eraser and erased the shiny bits.
#five. Add some different lighting.
gradient tool, linear gradient, with #ffffff & #000000 at approximately 75°,
(the gradient looks like this:
) soft light, 100% opacity.
#six. Add some warmth.
fill layer, #f492de soft light, 40% opacity.
#seven. Lack of contrast.
hide last layer. select all, copy merged, paste at the top. set to soft light 100% & show previous layer. her face is a little off, I like it the way it was, so I just erased her cheeks.
Done, comment for the .psd.
