Italy, Shout Out!

Donghae loved Kyuhyun's voice, until he realised he was in love with more than that.
a/n: I realised my exams start on Hae's birthday in 2 days - dislike x infinity. I'm going to be out of action for a month or so til I'm done, ah, so I come bearing a parting-gift-fic! It degraded down into fluff in the end because I'm physically incapable of writing angst apparently, so happy reading and hope you don't start gagging on sparkles and rainbows and cliche! /thumbs up
Donghae knew Kyuhyun had no clue about the first time they crossed paths all those years ago.
He had been wandering around after dance practice, ditching his Super Junior 05 members to take a bit of time out by himself, just for a little while. He could tell Hyukjae wanted to join him, but he really needed some alone-alone time, and his friend had nodded an Okay, be back soon though!
And he’d gotten away.
He found himself ambling through the quieter side of the SM building where he knew the newest trainees stayed, and since it was - he checked his watch - two fourteen am, he doubted there’d be many people around because after all, the newest were usually the youngest and they had curfews. A few people shuffled past him, not giving him a second glance, and he was glad.
Donghae rolled his shoulder and scratched idly at his stomach, yawning. The peace and quiet was a nice change from his absolutely hectic new dorms, and Donghae just really needed time to think and absorb all this new fame. He sat himself down in an indentation off the corridor wall, a space he suspected was used for storage. The schedules had been horrible and he knew he really should be heading back but still. He tilted his head back and inhaled deeply.
Whilst thinking all about how his mother was at home, wondering if she was missing him and how he was going to send his first paycheck back to her, he heard a voice. Donghae sat up a little, head cocked.
Somebody was singing. Somebody had opened their mouth and out had come the most beautiful sound he thought he’d ever heard. Sure, he could hear a roughness and untrained dips and inflections, but the rich, mellow sound seemed to wrap all around him, and Donghae was pretty damn curious now. Was that… a trainee? It couldn’t be! And yet…
He stood up, hefting his bag onto one shoulder and headed silently towards the sound. Surreptitiously peering through the tiny window in the door, he was pleasantly surprised. It was a trainee - that hair had definitely not been cut or styled by the stylist noonas, god - and he had a sheet of ballad music clutched in his hand as he stood up and sung quietly, eyes closed, emotion pouring out of that skinny frame decked out casually in trackpants and a tee.
The kid opened his eyes. Donghae’s head tilted again - he was pretty cute in a scruffy sort of way, he guessed, but that shouldn’t be much of an issue when those vocals belted out. He watched for a bit longer as the kid shuffled around inside, arranging the papers back into the neat pile on the lone desk, a laptop beside them. Donghae rose an eyebrow when the kid looked at the clock, seemed to contemplate something, then flipped open the electronic device.
Donghae saw a text document, probably school work, before the kid changed windows and a huge notification of “Game paused” appeared. The kid pulled up a chair, sat down, unpaused, and seemed to palm the keyboard, doing three things at once, dark eyes darting around the screen rapidly.
Donghae blinked.
How someone managed to click away so quickly in the early hours of the morning, after singing practice, was beyond him. He snuck off.
When Donghae crawled into bed later that morning, he suddenly had a thought. He was that kid’s sunbae. He shouldn’t have to sneak around!
He huffed and promptly fell asleep.
*
The kid, Kyuhyun, as he was introduced, had joined their group three weeks later. Donghae looked almost wonderingly at him, causing Kyuhyun to give him a weird, slightly uneasy look when Donghae kept staring. The kid was sporting a new hairstyle and better fitting clothes and he really scrubbed up well.
“Have we met before?” Kyuhyun had said to him, politely. He seemed a bit passive and very harmless, which was a slight disappointment.
“Ah, I don’t think so. I’m Lee Donghae~” Donghae grinned widely. Kyuhyun shifted awkwardly before turning away as Sungmin introduced himself.
For a few days, it had been uncomfortable. At the dinner table, Kyuhyun had eaten quickly and silently before washing up his bowl and excusing himself quietly and disappearing off somewhere. While Heechul bitched on and on about why do we need a new member? There’s already twelve of us! Can he even sing? even before Kyuhyun had completely left the dorm, Donghae had been surprised at how apparently unaffected their new maknae was. Then again, he guessed Kyuhyun knew he could sing anyway, so sticks and stones and so on, so forth.
It was almost eleven at night when Donghae had decided to look for Kyuhyun, dragging Eeteuk and Hyukjae along to where he knew he’d find Kyuhyun. The leader had followed benignly, in an unstressed enough mood to humour his dongsaeng and to be honest, he was a little curious. Not that their new member wasn’t nice or anything, but he did seem rather bland and Eeteuk was pretty certain they could’ve done fine without him...
Donghae stepped briskly into the hallway. He raised a finger to his lips, signaling for quiet, and they headed towards the lighted room four, five doors down. Immediately outside, Donghae leaned back against the wall beside the door and waited. Hyukjae silently questioned him. He just waved a hand, just wait.
And then, Kyuhyun had opened his mouth and sang. It was funny the way Eeteuk’s eyebrows rose spectacularly high and Hyukjae’s face had an expression of sudden, great, great understanding. They lingered outside until Kyuhyun finished, repeating certain phrases again to get a perfect pitch. Donghae clicked the door open and stuck his head in.
“That was really good, Kyuhyun-shii.”
Kyuhyun squeaked in surprise, then frowned at himself for letting out such a sound. “Ah… Thank you?”
He seemed to peer suspiciously at something behind Donghae so Hyukjae pushed the door open and stepped in.
He walked up to the nervous-looking boy and grasped his arm, smiling encouragingly. “Come on, you haven’t had dessert yet. It’s mango pudding,” Eeteuk nodded a little, then, and Kyuhyun hadn’t escaped to the trainee rooms after that because he’s just freely hummed to himself as he wandered around their dorms.
**
Kyuhyun arched one eyebrow as he was shoved across so Donghae could flop down onto the couch beside him, an Italian game show playing on the television.
“Who was the first Super Junior member you met?” he asked, watching Kyuhyun eye the biscuits in his hand.
Offering them up, Donghae waited as Kyuhyun chewed thoughtfully. “I think it was Ryeowook-ah.” The sound of Rome’s night traffic filtered into their hotel suite. “We ran into each other outside the building a week before I joined and he had no idea who I was,” Kyuhyun chuckled, sipping at wine in his hand, “but I was playing Starcraft and he was actually interested.”
Donghae frowned. “Okay then.”
Kyuhyun eyed his hyung; there was something up. He voiced it. “Why this all of a sudden?”
Eetuek exclaimed loudly in background as Hyukjae and Ryeowook spoke excitedly into their leader’s speakerphone, to Shindong it seemed.
“Ah, just curious.”
Kyuhyun hummed, casting a suspicious glance at him. “Really,” he deadpanned.
“Well, what if I told you I heard you singing three weeks before you joined?”
Kyuhyun frowned. “Lots of people heard me sing,” he said.
“Ah, you probably don’t remember. Don’t worry about it!” Donghae smiled brightly, picking up the remote.
They sat in silence for a while, Kyuhyun continuously pilfering biscuits from the tray and Donghae chewed just a little bit slower because he really didn’t spend as much time with the maknae as he thought he did.
“Wait,” Kyuhyun said suddenly, tensing up imperceptibly. “I remember feeling like I was being stalked in the training rooms -”
Donghae pouted. “I didn’t stalk you! It was just once, and I was there for barely twenty minutes!”
“It was you? Hyung, what the hell!” Kyuhyun looked genuinely surprised, though he was laughing. “You’re so creepy- ”
“Yah, yah! What’s going on?” Eeteuk intercepted.
Donghae could only look sheepish as Kyuhyun twisted around to look at their leader. “He’s a stalker,” he said bluntly, taking another sip of wine as the other two members came to see what the fuss was.
There were yells of “Donghae!” and “You weird person!” and “Poor maknae~” as they attacked the pair sitting on the couch, and Kyuhyun barely had time to tuck his bottle away safely before he fell back with a surprised exhale.
As it turns out, everyone was more or less drunk.
Shindong laughed from across the speakerphone connection and yelled out “Have fun!” before hanging up with a chuckle.
*
Donghae climbed into Kyuhyun’s bed, shaking his shoulder gently until he woke up.
“Eh, what is it?” he asked sleepily.
“We don’t hang out enough.”
“…We’re in Italy with the group.”
“Yes, but not us, you know, just us,” he said, frustrated. “I know what your favourite food is, and what type of wine you like best, but things like who your friends were in training or what you want to do in twenty years, I don’t know that kind of stuff!”
“I hung out with the people in my classes and in twenty years I want to be singing,” was the reply. “Go to sleep, hyung. I’ll talk to you when we wake up.”
And Kyuhyun rolled over, completely ignoring him.
Donghae huffed loudly. He laid back and stared up at the patterned ceiling, too exhausted to drag himself back out of Kyuhyun’s bed after the hectic day. Ryeowook was sleeping like a log on the other side of the two youngest’s shared room. Eventually, Donghae felt himself dozing off and not caring anymore, he slid underneath the covers, promptly dropping off to sleep.
The next morning was sort of awkward when he opened his eyes to find himself tucked around the maknae. Carefully extricating his limbs, he slid out. He rubbed his arms against the cold and yawned, padding out of the room to make coffee. The others weren’t awake yet, so he seated himself at the table, both hands wrapped around the warm mug.
Kyuhyun wandered in.
Donghae raised a brow at the trackpants. “Didn’t you have those when we debuted? And just as I thought you got some style~” he teased, bringing the coffee to his lips.
Kyuhyun glared half heartedly through his glasses and poured himself a warm mug of morning wakeup call. He leaned back against the counter.
“We should wake the others,” he started. “We’ve got be out of here in-“ he glanced at the clock, “forty five minutes.” He sighed at the prospect of waking their leader who was a horrible morning grouch before he had his coffee hit and instantly transformed.
Donghae hummed his acquiescence, getting up and trundling right up to his dongsaeng. He pressed an unexpected poke to Kyuhyun’s cheek and said, “You’re cute.”
Kyuhyun just spluttered, eyes going huge, then narrowing in suspicion.
“What do you want, Donghae?”
Donghae put on his best puppy impression and smiled. “Let’s hang out.”
Kyuhyun sighed, sliding sideways to get out from underneath Donghae, who was almost trapping him against the counter. “And I call you hyung…” he muttered, heading off to wake the troops.
Donghae’s grin turned thoughtful and he rubbed idly at the patch of skin Kyuhyun had accidentally brushed against on his way out.
*
“You... what did you - Donghae-ah, I don’t think is a smart course of action.” Hyukjae said. “Kyuhyun’s a lot smarter than even we give him credit for and he’s bound to figure it out.”
Donghae chewed on his lip. “At least give it a try?”
Hyukjae sighed. “I hope you know what you’re. But you owe me dinner!”
Donghae brightened. “Sure.”
“Anywhere I want~”
“Aw, come on…”
*
During dinner at a trendy restaurant two blocks away, Hyukjae lured Eeteuk and Ryeowook away, leaving his two friends at the table by themselves. Kyuhyun was polishing off his pasta, barely looking up as they got up and left.
Donghae mentally thanked Hyukjae and said, “Yah, can I have some?”
Kyuhyun looked up at him, then stabbed his fork into a prawn on Donghae’s plate. Taking that as a yes, he reached out to grab some of that pasta when suddenly, Kyuhyun ahem-ed loudly.
With quite a serious expression, he intoned, “Did I say yes?”
He promptly burst out in laughter at Donghae’s shocked expression.
Donghae was inexplicably drawn to that rich, deep sound, Kyuhyun’s happy smile, those perfectly white teeth, and before he knew what he was doing, he was leaning in and pressing a kiss against the corner of those lips. He never imagined how soft that skin actually was.
When the maknae froze in surprise, Donghae pulled back, suddenly nervous.
“Can we hang out now?” he said.
The silence stretched on, and he started to fidget. His eyes never strayed off Kyuhyun’s face, though.
“Hyung,” Kyuhyun finally said. “What the hell.”
Donghae’s heart dropped.
*
Hyukjae looked worriedly at his best friend. When they’d gotten back to the table, there was an inexplicably tense silence, and Hyukjae took one look at Donghae’s saddened face and Kyuhyun’s blank one, he knew things hadn’t gone to plan. If Kyuhyun’s slightly trembling hand was anything to go by, Donghae had scared the poor thing half to death, it seemed.
What did he actually say to warrant such a reaction?!
He cornered Donghae in his room later that night.
“Aish, talk to me.”
Donghae flopped back on Hyukjae’s bed. “...”
Hyukjae gingerly sat beside his friend. “What happened?”
Donghae’s voice dropped to an ashamed whisper. “I practically molested him.”
“EH?”
“I just - what am I going to do, Hyuk? He’s going to hate me forever.”
Ryeowook stepped away from the closed door, understanding written all over his face. He mulled over what he’d accidentally heard and continued on his way to the living room, jacket in hand.
Super Junior members could sure be dense sometimes, he decided.
He called Kyuhyun, who was out with leader-shii, and loudly put on his most cheerful voice. “Kyu-ah~ Let’s hang out!... What do you mean my voice is loud?!... I’m not!... Okay fine, I’ll see you soon. Bye!”
He backtracked down the hallway. “Donghae-hyung! Hyukjae-hyung! Let’s go to karaoke!” Ryeowook called through the door.
Hyukjae only paused for a second before he dragged his best friend up and out, ignoring his protests.
*
Donghae realized he was in love during the second song.
Kyuhyun sang, easily hitting the high notes, quickly picking up unfamiliar melodies and had an uncanny ability to harmonize perfectly with Ryeowook’s renditions.
Donghae supposed he should be jealous, but he wasn’t.
Earlier, when Ryeowook had turned up with his two hyungs unexpectedly in tow, Kyuhyun had avoided his steady gaze until he seemed to resolve something internally and met his eyes. They revealed nothing in particular, and Donghae was glad he hadn’t completely destroyed their friendship.
But half a minute into the second song, Donghae decided he was in love, and he didn’t know what to do.
*
Donghae climbed into Kyuhyun’s bed for the second time on their trip and he didn’t hesitiate to pull the covers over himself. They were warm from Kyuhyun’s body heat.
The maknae was used to being randomly accosted by other members at random moments, so he lazily looked over, fully expecting Ryeowook to be curled up there, sleepily mumbling about it being cold. His same age friend had unfortunately gotten the bed right under the air conditioner, so while the temperature was perfect for the rest of the large hotel suite, it was freezing in that particular spot.
This time, though, he stiffened. Donghae’s large eyes watched him carefully and Kyuhyun felt unease beginning to creep into him.
“Donghae-hyung,” he greeted.
“Kyu-ah,” Donghae said. “…I want to apologize.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Abruptly, Donghae’s arm came snaking around his waist and really, this was getting a bit intimate.
“Uh - “
“I came to Italy for vacation because you did.”
Kyuhyun was silent and he wouldn’t look at him. Donghae’s felt sort of sick.
“Go to sleep.” Donghae said, closing his eyes. “Just, let me do this once?”
When there was still no response, he pulled himself closer to gently press his chest against Kyuhyun’s left arm, head mere inches away from that soft, fluffy mess of hair that Kyuhyun always sported out when he was out of the limelight.
Donghae tried really, really hard not to break down, and instead focused on the conforting warmth in his grasp. “Thanks, Kyu.”
His eyes started awake when he felt lips hesitantly press against the tip of his nose. He met Kyuhyun’s warm, dark eyes.
Stroking gently at Kyuhyun’s waist, Donghae’s stomach fluttered. He admitted, “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“Neither do I,” Kyuhyun replied and he turned to tentatively bury himself closer to Donghae.
Traffic moved sluggishly outside, the clock flashed a neon green 01:53AM and nobody noticed Ryeowook’s satisfied smile.
*
“Kyu,”
“What?”
“Want some te-a~?” Donghae said brightly in english, handing Kyuhyun a cup of tea.
“Geez, your accent’s really bad,” Kyuhyun sniped.
“Kyuhyun, be respectful to your elders.”
“…”
“Aish, I’ve really got to go."
"... Then go?"
"... You're supposed to say "No~" and put on some aegyo! Ok ok, not your image." Donghae laughed. "I’ll see you in a few days. Don’t forget to miss me!”
Kyuhyun raised an eyebrow and stepped around Donghae, flicking his laptop on.
“See you, Donghae,” he said offhandedly, purposely not using an honorific. His head turned away as he sipped at his drink and sat down, smirking.
Donghae resisted to urge to slap their maknae on the back of the head - because there would be consequences - and instead leaned in to graze his lips fondly against Kyuhyun’s cheek. “See you.”
“Hey, lovebird.” Heechul drawled, leaning against the doorframe, eyeing Donghae. “I know you just got back from vacation, but you’ve got a plane to catch.”
“Alright, alright, I’m going! Bye Kyu-ah, Heechul-hyung.”
“Mm, bye hyung.” Kyuhyun muttered distractedly.
Donghae stepped out of the dorm, made a decision, then dashed back inside to press a kiss against Kyuhyun’s lips, then trundled out again, pleased grin plastered across his face at Kyuhyun’s surprised yelp.
On the plane to Thailand, Donghae plugged in Kyuhyun’s solo albums and drifted into a comfortable state of mind as he felt that rich, deep sound envelop him. It felt good to be in love.
a/n: I realised Hae actually says “ohno I molested Kyu!” then goes and molests him some more… :D?
