What happens in Italy

sky_so_blu ; PG ; Kyuhae
In which Donghae behaves oddly and Hyukjae tries to figure it out.

a/n: I'm pretty sure duty free shopping happens on your way in to an airport, but ah, let's play pretend for the sake of fanfic :) And, I thought I was writing in present tense until I realised I wasn't. Smart, right? Just bear with me & the typoes -cookie-

Eunhyuk was bored. He idly picked at a loose thread on his shirt, fingers restless and body itching to go. The flight was due in three quarters of an hour and they’d been sitting here for an hour already, thanks to their very own chronic worrywart. Eunhyuk glared at Eeteuk to no avail, the sleeping leader entirely unaware a member was plotting petty, petty revenge mere metres away. Maybe Eunhyuk could arrange for Eeteuk to suddenly sport a permanent marker moustache upon his wakening...

“Yah, Donghae,” he whispered to his friend. His right arm nudged him when there was no response. Eunhyuk frowned, his head tilting as he stared. Donghae was sulking for some reason and he was refusing to admit it. He was unusually calm as he sat beside Eunhyuk, right leg drawn up to his chest, eyes closed, head tilted back.

“Kyu-ah!” Ryeowook exclaimed suddenly beside him. Eunhyuk’s head turned and he noticed absently that Donghae suddenly twitched violently, eyes focused on their dongsaeng. “Really? Okay, sure. Have fun, I’ll see you soon. Bye Kyuhyun-ah~~!”

His interest peaked, Eunhyuk said, “What was that about?”

Ryeowook tucked his phone back into his bag and smiled at him, coffee nursed in hand. “He’s in Venice already and he said he’d share wine with me when we meet up if I buy it at the duty free on our way out. What a cheap person...” Ryeowook huffed before raising his cup. “Want some coffee, Hyukjae-hyung?”

“Hey, this is good!”

“Yeah! I hope they have this in Italy.”

A pause.

“Yah! Don’t drink all of it!”

Eunhyuk snickered and took an extra large sip before handing over the mostly empty cup.

“Hyung, that wasn’t very mature.” Ryeowook levelled a steady, disapproving look at him, and he was beginning to feel suitably chastised before he noticed a smile dancing around the corners of his lips.

He turned his eyes the side before suddenly launching a hand out to completely mess up Ryeowook’s hair.

“Ah! Stop it!”

Forty five minutes seemed to fly after that because Ryeowook seemed to share his restlessness, though Eunhyuk suspected it was caffeine induced since his dongsaeng promptly fell asleep after the initial boarding kerfuffle.

Donghae continued to be mostly silent, though he initiated conversation a few times before Eunhyuk himself tired out, the rumbling of the plane lulling him into an uncomfortable weariness. Something was bothering his best friend, and Eunhyuk was determined to figure out what was up. Just after he took a nap.

*

It was Kyuhyun, he decided. Eunhyuk had kept a close watch on Donghae, categorizing each reaction of his best friend, though it was painfully uninteresting when Donghae fell asleep. Eunhyuk decided then to cut down on his vigilance while they were sleeping, because being a creeper was entirely not okay, even if he had a good cause.

So he kept an eye on Donghae, and aside from the occasional twitch of surprise when people seemed to recognise them and loudly snapped fan photos, he was pretty normal. Donghae seemed to regain his usual, bubbly self when they stepped off the plane and were greeted with the Italian sun beaming down through the airport’s glass windows.

They had dinner and spent the night taking photos outside and around their hotel, wandering past shopping complexes side by side with local stores. Upon meeting up with Super Junior’s technically official magnae earlier, Donghae’s demeanour shifted almost imperceptibly.

Eunhyuk prided himself with being able to read reactions, and he could’ve sworn Donghae practically attached himself to Kyuhyun. First, it was because Kyuhyun had already wandered around the area, so he had the geographic knowledge, of course. Then, the excuses seemed to get more ridiculous - even Eeteuk looked strangely at Donghae when he declared he’d help Kyuhyun order food from the street vendor and dashed off. It was less than twenty metres away, and the seller had put up signs with pictures.

So Eunhyuk took it upon himself to scrutinize Donghae’s behaviour even further.

*

“Eeteuk-hyung, can you take a photo for me?” Kyuhyun said, already planting his camera in their leader’s hand and stepping back to pose against the gorgeous landscape.

Eunhyuk finally found the right word for Donghae’s odd behaviour. He hovered. Ryeowook suddenly grabbed Eunhyuk’s wrist and pulled him into a photo, so he grinned automatically, poking a peace sign into his dongsaeng’s cheek. There wasn’t any time for protest; the camera went snap! and that was that. Eunhyuk laughed wildly at the pout on Ryeowook’s face, and for a moment he almost forgot to keep tabs of Donghae.

Then again, Donghae had somehow wormed his way into Kyuhyun’s photo and had an arm slung over his shoulders while Jungsu took photos, saying random nonsensical ‘Italian’ phrases that were really just Korean with -issmo tacked onto their tails as his two dongsaengs laughed their heads off.

Eunhyuk thought holidays were the best.

*

It was completely by accident that he found out, which would have been a tad irritating because it wasn’t from his very own brilliant observation skills, but to be honest, he was far too surprised for any of that.

To cut a long story short, upon stepping into their hotel suite early to change for their night time city tour - completely necessary because Eeteuk had somehow managed to land sauce on his jeans - he laid eyes on Kyuyhun, who was sipping a cup of wine and clicking away at his keyboard uploading photos for the fans. But that in itself wasn’t surprising. It was the fact that Donghae was sitting next to him, arm around the back of Kyu’s chair. He wasn’t just doing that, oh no. Out of nowhere, he poked Kyuhyun’s cheek as he was drinking, and as per the laws of cause and effect, their maknae twitched the tiniest little bit in surprise. It was enough to spill the wine and it dripped from the corners of his mouth.

Eunhyuk remembered Donghae drawing his hand up to wipe at the corners of Kyuhyun’s mouth, collecting the wine and smearing it back onto his lips, and Kyuhuyn lapped up the traces of the alcohol, shooting Donghae a glare for startling him. From Eunhyuk’s then frozen spot, he definitely saw Kyu’s tongue make contact with Donghae’s fingers more than once and yet, neither of them looked uncomfortable. In fact, when Donghae started trailing his fingers up and down Kyu’s neck, drawing a soft “Mmm,”, they looked more than comfortable.

Then, Donghae leaned in and fucking licked the maknae’s neck.

“Stop it, Donghae ... uh...” Kyu had started, trailing off when he spotted Eunhyuk at the door, his eyes comically wide, hand coming up automatically to rub away the spot of saliva.

Donghae frowned, curling his hand over Kyuhyun’s to still his movements and glanced in Eunhyuk’s direction offhandedly. He froze and gaped.

There was a gut-twistingly awkward silence.

Then, Eunhyuk lost it.

“Ah.. hahahaha! Is this why you’ve been sulking, Donghae-ah?!“ he cackled, laughter escalating until he needed to lean an arm on the wall for support. “You’re annoyed he left for Italy without you?? And that phone call to Ryeowook-shii!” He wiped away tears of laughter as the mood in the room lightened, Kyuhyun looking somewhat confused and wishing desperately that no-one else would walk in, and Donghae was steadily turning red.

“Yah, what’s wrong with you!?”

“Donghae? What’s going on?”

Eunhyuk didn’t miss the lack of honorifics and it set him off again.

“You - You - Oh I can’t believe I didn’t see it! Heh.. heheh.”

“...Hyukjae-hyung?”

“Hyukjae, why are you laughing?!”

Through his blurry vision, Eunhyuk noticed that Kyuhyun, at this point, had decided to wait and watch. Smart boy.

“Hyukjae-ah. Be quiet. You’re disturbing the hotel.” Eeteuk’s voice suddenly rang out, completely serious.

He shut up.

But then there was a twinkling in those eyes. “Donghae.” A pause. “You could’ve, I don’t know, just called him?”

Eunhyuk collapsed in laughter. Donghae’s face went completely red, and Kyuhyun finally caught on. Fighting the urge to hide under the desk in mortification, because you know, he had an image too!, Kyuhyun was infinitely grateful when tugged up by his same-age friend. Ryeowook took the cup out of his hand, setting it gently on the desk. He quietly questioned him whether he needed to save that web page, Kyu? with the answering ‘no,’ just barely heard over Donghae kicking Eunhyuk in the butt as their friend remained collapsed on the ground laughing. Jungsu hyung laughed at them fondly.

“Ok then. Let’s eat!” Ryeowook announced. He seemed to bounce away, dragging his friend with him just as Donghae, face still red from embarrassment, turned his gaze to Eeteuk, cheeky, slightly relieved smile a two second warning before his foot landed on leader’s butt and Eeteuk went sprawling.

“Yah!”

*

“So, when were you going to tell me?”

“...”

“... I can do that too, you know. For longer~”

Donghae sighed, shifting on the uncomfortable bus seat. The other three were busy on the other side of the aisle snapping photos and consulting their dictionaries. “Tell you that I was in an involved relationship with a Super Junior member? You know it could destroy our image.”

Eunhyuk was still hurt. Donghae shared everything with him. Usually, that is, it seemed.

“Ah, I wasn’t planning to telling anyone, to tell the truth...”

“You were just going to keep sneaking off to stalk Kyuhyun-shii in secret and get pissy everytime he called someone else?”

“Yah! Don’t put it like that!”

“Well, its true, if you haven’t already noticed.”

A long pause as Eunhyuk stared at his best friend and Donghae looked somewhat chastitised.

“Tell me when important things happen okay? You can trust me.”

“Thanks.” Donghae was honestly grateful. “... Why were you not surprised though?!”

Eunhyuk shrugged, and Donghae knew he really did have good friends. He looked suspiciously over when Hyukjae seemed to contemplate something before opening his big mouth -

“... But I don’t need to know when you and Kyu-shii get up to your dirty - MMMF!”

Donghae’s hand firmly clapped over his mouth, face scrunched up in a weird imitation of those gargoyles they’d just passed. His voice was completely different though, sickly sweet even though the words that came out made Eunhyuk want to crack up.

“I’m not going to tell you anything ever again if you finish that sentence, okay~?”

*

An Italian guy tried to hit on Kyuhyun on the street in the morning. Donghae promptly appeared beside their maknae with an irritated expression and the rest of the members tried not the snigger as the stranger moved away immediately, shooting Donghae an odd look.

(Hi, do you need some help? There aren’t many things to see in this district, Eunhyuk looked up in his dictionary later. Oops.)
