A lump on one of the two beds, covered head to toe in the blanket, shuddered violently. The blanket parted to reveal a small brown head with wide brown eyes that glanced fearfully at the window. Rain lashed ferociously against the window. The Supervisor had been right to warn him to stay indoors.
"Yuren...," he called out. The lump on the other bed moved slightly as a girl sat up.
"Yes?" she asked sleepily. The storm outside had not scared the older girl at all.
"I want Papa to come back..." said the boy. "He said he was going away, but... it has already been so long...."
The girl crawled off the bed and walked over to the other bed. She put a hand on the boy's head. "Don't think too much Mana," she said. "Papa will be back soon. Go to sleep."
Lavi slammed his hands down on Komui's desk. The Yoshi coffee cup rattled. "He what?!?" the redhead demanded. "He said it was under control!"
"Not recently it seems," Komui replied, looking grave. "Given Lenalee's hysterical report, we can safely conclude that when Allen left he already knew what was happening. And was precisely the reason why he didn't bring the kids along."
Lavi brought his hands back and ran one over his hair. "But that is no fucking reason why he should just up and leave like that without telling anyone! You know how those two kids have been moping in their room day after day just waiting for Allen to come back?"
Komui chose not to answer. "Will you do the same?" he asked. "If you were the one who became a Noah and you know that Junior wil be targeted to be used as bait?"
Lavi glared back at the Supervisor instead and started pacing in front of the desk. "Yuu's been really down too. All I can do is get Junior to keep him occupied so that he won't be training like a madman." He stopped his pacing and looked at Komui. "So what are you going to do about the kids?"
Komui shrugged. "I haven't thought of that yet."
Lavi sighed. "Looks like it's up to me again..."
Mana’s fear for storms kept him awake. Usually Allen would come over and keep Mana company until he fell asleep. Allen’s presence during a storm, to Mana, felt like nothing can hurt him. He tried using Yuren’s suggestion but the constant rumble of thunder is always there. He looked over at Yuren’s bed. The older girl was fast asleep already. Mana shrank back into the cover of the blanket and tried to block out the loud sound of thunder.
The door of the room suddenly opened, flooding the room with light from the hallway. A tall figure walked into the room. Mana squinted in the light, his bed was placed in a way that the hall light will fall on him.
“Mana, Yuren, wake up,” he heard someone’s voice saying to them. He recognized the voice as Lavi’s. His eyes finally adjusted to the brightness. He saw Lavi walking around to Yuren to shake her awake. “Mana, good you’re awake.”
Yuren’s eyes opened blearily. “What’s… going on?” she asked, her voice barely above that of a whisper.
Lavi just said “I’ll tell you later. From now on you’re all going to room with Junior.”
Yuren’s eyes lost its sleepy look immediately. “Why?!?” she asked. “Why must we go with you?”
“I’ll tell you later,” Lavi said as he turned to Mana. “Let’s go.” Mana did not hesitate and jumped off the bed. After finally coaxing Yuren to leave the room, Lavi brought them to Junior’s room.
“Yuu, they’re here,” Lavi said as he opened the door to Junior’s room and gestured both kids inside. Kanda was sitting on a chair and watching Junior sleep at the other side of the room.
“Piglets, you’ll sleep there until Lavi move your stuff over,” Kanda said pointing to a couple of mattresses on the floor.
Lavi’s face held shock. “Yuu, you must never refer to kids as ‘piglets’,” he said as Yuren led Mana to the mattresses on the floor. “They were your kids too.”
Kanda looked away with a small ‘che’ and said, “Piglets related to the beansprout have nothing to do with me.”
Mana watched with sad eyes. “Mama…,” he said softly. Lavi moved fast enough to restrain Kanda from throwing a cushion at the smaller boy.
“Yuu will you leave it and get it over already?” Lavi said as he wrestled the cushion out of Kanda’s hands. “You’re going to be looking after them again whether you like it or not!!” The mini wrestling match had woken up the other boy sleeping. He rubbed his eyes and saw Lavi and Kanda fighting for the cushion. The two children sitting on the floor caught his attention.
“Mana!!” Junior said happily as he jumped out of the bed and ran to Mana and Yuren. “What’re you here for?” He saw Yuren casting a furtive glance at the still fighting Exorcists. Junior smiled knowingly. His parents were forever fighting.
“Papa!!” he called out. “Can I sleep with them?”
Lavi and Kanda stopped snatching for the cushion immediately. “I don’t know…” Lavi said. “If I were taking care of you today and tomorrow I would say ok but Yuu is in charge of you at the moment.”
“No,” was the blunt reply from Kanda, the cushion lay forgotten on the floor.
“EH???” was the reply from both Junior and Mana. “Please!!! Mama!!!” Junior pleaded.
Kanda shot them a withering glare. “If you really will sleep in ten minutes I’ll let you stay with the piglets. If not I’ll throw you back onto your own bed.”
Junior smiled brightly and quickly lay down. Mana followed Junior’s example and the three of them quickly went back to dreamland. Lavi sat on Junior’s bed as there was a lack of chairs in the room. “You really need to stop threatening the poor kid like that Yuu,” he said softly. “So what’re we gonna tell Mana and Yuren? The straight truth that Allen has become a Noah and we’re adopting them?”
Kanda looked at him in the eye. “Do we have another alternative?” he asked. “Unless you can come up with a more creative way to break it to them. And is it really ok for you to just take them in? Whatever happened to your Bookman rules of ‘No attachments’?”
“Screw that rule Yuu,” Lavi replied. “They’re sleeping already, let’s go back.” He took Kanda’s hand and left the room together.
Notes:
- Kanda's referring the Mana and Yuren as 'piglets' taken from Pink Panther 2 movie.
- Allen is the Musician HOHOHO~
