Again the News

Jul 17, 2006 08:03

Today, my morning EuroNews consisted of a good 4 or 5 minutes on the situation in Lebanon and Israel.

Today they even spent a whole 1 minute of that on talking to Israeli people...well, one was a French tourist.

We call this a 'selective sampling' as they mostly talked to people involved in the small protest against the attacks and people around.

Hmm....do I trust this media?

I was told recently (and given a few media studies as evidence) that American media is predominantly pro-Israel.

I'm curious and would like to ask my friends here, is that true?

From my experience, I see more anti-Israeli press. I understand that they are 'presenting both sides', but I doubt there is no bias. [And I can assume without being there that Fox News is a fan of Israeli actions].

A note on the same situation:

Israel can not back down now. (Yes, it might have been nice not to go this far so fast, but too late.)
In the world of politics and war, especially in these cultures, it is important not to be the one to back down.

Now they require a Western country (or Russia as a Western/Non-Western power) to broker a peaceful ceasefire. The reason is simple...respect and power brokerage. Obviously, America will need to be involved (as Israel doesn't listen to anyone, but at leasts considers American opinion and funding). I think that a Russo-American brokered deal would be best since the surrounding countries respect Russia. (European involvement will be certain, but unnecessary and just slow the process.) The deal can already be written and even speculated as to what factors will be involved. I'm not sure that all of the promises of that deal would be necessarily met (like Hezbollah disarmament) but would be a temporary ceasefire nonetheless. (With continued lobbing of projectiles as have been common for the last 16 years or so.)
[Can I give treaty details? YES...just don't have the time or desire. Besides, most of my friends are very intelligent, so they'll figure most of them out pretty fast.]

Anyone want to add 2 cents (or 2 kopecks, 2 shekels (NIS), 2 krone, 2 pence, etc.)?
