Meet Fender

Since we started volunteering at the animal shelter, there's been a few kitties to sink their claws into Luka's heart, and a couple we even contemplated moving homes just so we could adopt them.  Falling in love is one of the dangers, of course, and my sweet, tender-hearted wife has a knack for bonding with only the most amazing cats.

It was only a matter of time before one of them got to me.

This is Fender.  Sweet floofy face, huh?  He was picked up as a stray, if you can friggin' believe it.  He has only three modes: asleep, purring, and purring loud.

The moment I saw him in his kennel, I just had a feeling.  I opened the door and he started purring, padded up to me, and nuzzled my face.  I love it when they play hard to get.  Then he climbed up on my shoulder and settled in.  So, we went for a stroll.

Walk around with a loudly purring kitten on your shoulders and see what happens.  Messiahs don't get as warm a reception.  If he had already been fixed, I would have had him adopted out three times with just one trip down the hallway.  All kittens are cute, but this boy has it . . . Star Power.

Saturdays we go to the shelter, Sundays we stay home and laze around.  This Sunday, we had to go back, a special trip just to see Fender.  He saw me and started purring again, climbing right up into his spot as soon as the door was open.  We were flippin' bonding.  Luka brought some kitty-treats.  There's something wonderful about hearing a cat purr and chew at the same time.

The family who was adopting Fender (who hadn't been in the system officially for even a day) showed up a few minutes later, at first a little miffed that someone was messing with their cat.  It was great to get to meet them and find out about where Fender was going.  Most of the time, we fall in love with a cat only to show up a week later to find it gone to who knows where.  This family had just lost a cat that lived to 19 years, so they know how to keep cat, I'd say.  I spent some time with them and Fender, and there was a lot of mutual admiration going on.  It's great to know he's going to a loving home.

Just before closing we snuck back in to say goodbye and snap a couple of pictures.  The only time Fender meows is when your going away.  He reaches through the door of the kennel and asks you to stay longer.  He never stops purring though.
