One of the highest joys of marriage, for me at least, is that group-mind you eventually achieve with your mate. Luka and I finish more and more of each other's thoughts as the years go by, and where that would irritate me with most folks, with her I just end up laughing.
Luka (in the a.m. hours before I head off to work): Geez, you're moaning like you're at death's door.
Me: If I were at death's door, I'd pretend to sell magazine subscriptions so that he'd get irritated and send me away.
Luka: What magazines do you think death would subscribe to?
The both of us suddenly lock eyes, each certain of what the other is about to say even as we say it ourselves: Life. (giggles)
Me: He'd probably buy it but never renew, just to have Life expire.
Then we eat our breakfast onion rings. It's a grand life, I must admit.

Last Saturday while we were at the shelter, Luka handed me a kitten named Keifer. She needed to pass him off for just a moment and luckily I was standing right there after having walked the last dog who needed out time. When she came back, Kiefer and I were getting along swimmingly, so she left him in my care. We spent the next 45 minutes together. Within the first 10, he'd curled up and took a nap. He woke up briefly after a half-hour or so to purr at me, then snoozed some more. I had to wake him up to put him back into his kennel at closing time.
This was the nicest compliment I've been paid in a long time. Kittens are comfortable with me. This needs to have a place on my resume.
