I just watched "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" again. It really is incredible how some very simple motivations leads to an amazing story. You've got three characters who all want the same thing, and frequently work with each other to get it, but all the while knowing that each of them would rather get there alone. Yeah. The trick is mainly to play in such a way that everyone stays honest. Examples include dangling Tuco from a noose to make sure the loot is divided fairly (Tuco can't pull any tricks when he's worried about his neck), and the way Blondie keeps himself alive by virtue of having information the other guy needs. One challenge in running the game would be to provide ways for people to set up those kinds of safeguards.

There could also be an XP reward for total party survival, and it would be up to the players to decide which was better. Of course, that means that one accidental death would set off a backstabbing frenzy. Hm. It's tricky, to be sure.

There's an idea. That would probably work, except armor class would need some tweaking. And in the original game, a gun would just do 1d6 damage, like everything else. Also, magic-users and D&D clerics don't really fit in the old west, so people might be stuck with fighters. Hm....
