Compendium 1
I don’t know exactly what brought this on, but I’ve been getting back into Rockman X! There haven’t been any new games very recently, but that’s OK, because I come to it from the manga anyway. I’ve found some info sites in English, and some creative sites in Japanese, but a lot of places have closed.
I like to read about the games, but I’m a clumsy player unless I have some cheat codes, and I like to read stories about the main characters, but I can’t write them myself. (Something I’ve noticed is English-language authors tend to be fans of the character they make dominant, and Japanese authors tend to be fans of the character they make the object of desire, or at least it looks that way to me.)
What I can do is translate, though, and I just got the Compendium of Rockman X around Christmastime, so I’ll try the character profiles from there. With luck, I won’t have to ask Shirayasha for help. I already asked her to listen to an audio file where the character’s voice was faint, but she’s not feeling well, so I hate to bother her.
X’s character profile takes 4 pages. It starts with the warning from the beginning of X1, attributed here to “T. Right”, not Light. The warning is already in English -- and only in English! I don’t need to translate it, unless it’s in the other direction…

…except he would probably use more jargon. That’s enough of that.
The banner across his picture reads, “X, the peace-loving Irregular Hunter”. The paragraph underneath reads, “An autonomous robot left by Dr. Light. [Translator’s Note: I’m going to use this spelling.] He was originally ranked as a B-Class Hunter because of his gentle personality that cannot be completely devoted to duty, but after repelling Sigma’s schemes many times, he has now become a leader-like figure to the Hunters. He has high expandability, and by means of special weapons and equipping armor parts, can hope to be active under any conditions.”
There’s a picture of X scolding Axl, with a dialog box: “What are you saying! If you fight, you play into their hands! It will just be another meaningless fight.” The caption on the side reads, “Pacifist X hates conflict and always aims for a peaceful solution. However, to save the Earth from Sigma’s assault, reluctantly he has to fight.”
At the bottom, there’s a black box with Basic Data. “Equipment: X-Buster, Special Weapons (interchangeable), Power-up Parts, various Armors. Post: Captain of Squad 17. [T.N.: It doesn’t specify Elite Squad 17 here.] Hunter Rank: B ~ Special A. Remarks: Pacifist.”
That’s just the first page, and it has the least text! It’s a lot harder to write out carefully than it is just to read for the general meaning, so I’m going to take this slowly.
But I just have to mention I’m also a Trigun fan, and the Basic Data box, after listing all military info like X’s armament and squadron and rank, saying “Remarks: Pacifist” reminds me so much of Vash’s “Wanted” poster!
