I wonder what X's latest official Hunter rank is? As late as X6, the guidebook still refers to him as a B-class. Although I don't have a book for it, I can't imagine him getting promoted in X7. I have the official Capcom guidebook for X8, and it discusses the in-game player ranking system, but I can't find background-story ranks in the character descriptions. The info may well be there, I just haven't found it yet.
(The X8 book does have a very welcome feature I've never seen before: a dialog collection! It's not exactly a full script, because Japanese guidebooks always hold back information about the last boss, but it's the most attention I've seen given to a story for an RMX game!)
I know X is an S-class in ComaMi. Actually, in the ComaMi book there was a little sidebar saying Axl made S-class before X did. But since ComaMi is sort of outside the main timeline, it doesn't help very much.
